do i need tutor or SAT prep?

hi, i am new to this forum, and i'm planning to stick around for a while. so, i would like to take the time to personally say hi to each and everyone of you, and looking forward to seeing you guys on the forum!

first, i thought you should know that i have been held back two years in high school. but i am trying my best to make it all right now. i should be graduating in another year.

anyhow, back to my question... i would like to know if i should go tutoring or SAT prep. even before that, i would like to know if there is even a difference between the two? if i take SAT prep classes, will they just provide me with a set of skills to help me take the test? or will they review specific subjects that will be on the test?

because the school i currently attend, is not the norm, as you would expect. it does not have the same required curricular as other high schools. so in most subjects i am way behind, especially in the math area. should it be recommended that i take tutor first? any help at all would be appreciated!

BUMP.

i think i’m going to settle down with tutoring. does anyone have a list of recommendations on good tutors in NYC?

in my opinion, I think tutors are better for one-on-one help, better for dissecting individual problems that you miss. classes are better for teaching you more tips and strategies.
in any case, i took classes and raised my score 200 points. and i’ve been helping tutor my friends haha

tutor it is then! one-on-one tutor seems like the better choice for me, though the more expensive choice at the same time. i’m leaning towards smaller tutor classes, unless someone can recommend me one-on-one tutors relatively cheaper and fairly priced than others.

if you read my first post, i mentioned that my school’s curriculum is lower than most regular high schools. i transferred to this alternative high school in september of 08, hoping to graduate faster. but the school i attended prior to this alternative HS, the subjects i left of at were; math A 1+2 and english 1+2. so, i don’t really have a solid base. i took the PSAT last year for the first and only time, and scored around a 1200, i need to raise it at least 500 points.

i really would appreciate any help. if you need any additional information about me, in order to determine what i need, please let me know.

stan

iownstan, what schools are you looking at, and what grade were you in when you took the PSAT?

i’m aiming for at least a SUNY; albany, buffalo, stony brook, etc.

i took the PSAT when i transferred to the alternative HS. here it doesn’t really go by grades. but i’d say the 11th grade or junior year.

anyone with a list of tutors? i would like to start as soon as possible. time is running out for me. ):

BUMP.

post too short.

do other states go by math a and math b, or is this just new york?
