Do I really need to take Spanish 3?

PLEASE ANSWER THIS IF YOU CAN. DEADLINES TO SIGN UP FOR CLASSES IS VERY SOON AND I'M FREAKING OUT ABOUT WHAT TO TAKE!

So I realize that there are many cc question about this, but i'd like for you to hear me out!

I really don't like taking my Spanish language class. It's very difficult for me to learn it and because I am a Junior now, I literally have all freshman in my class, and I feel like after high school I will forget all the Spanish I learned anyways. Let's just say I think its a waste of my time. (I personally think this, so please don't get offended if you love Spanish) lol.

But...
I feel like many college would rather see me take 3 years of Spanish instead of just 2. I did look up a lot of colleges and almost all of them only required 2, but there was still a few schools that said they required 3. Although, these are more competitive schools that I would only have a slight chance of getting into. I would much rather do student government instead of Spanish but I don't want to be put into a situation were I can't apply to a college senior year just because I didn't take that extra 3rd year of Spanish. I don't have any room for more classes in my schedule so it is either do Spanish and give up stugo, or do stugo and give up spanish.

If this helps at all, these are the classes I am planning to sign up for next year:
AP Lit
AP Psych
AP Stats
Art 1
Art 2
Us gov
Econ
Stugo
Anatomy

P.S. I'm taking AP calc and AP World history +other classes right now as a Junior so my I think my schedule had been pretty rigorous...right?

Thanks!

Here’s my 2 cents: I am a senior who is in AP french (sixth year taking it) and I have grown tired of the language. It is also difficult and helps little in the real world (I’ve stumbled across articles that are in french and were able to read them). I’ve heard from multiple people that AP Psych is a joke to colleges and they don’t take it seriously HOWEVER it’s your schedule so take what you like. I recommend taking spanish so you have your options open and if you want to do something LIKE student government you could always run for student rep or something (have you considered that option?). Be careful not to fill up your schedule too much because you will get swamped with college emails and applications (take it from me) and teachers trying to push you all out of the so-called “senioritis”. Also, Art 1 & 2? How different are they? Make your decision based on what YOU want and what would help you best in the future. GOOD LUCK!

Some colleges have foreign language graduation requirements. Completing a higher level in high school may give you placement in a higher level in college, allowing your to complete such requirements with fewer courses in college.

Thing is, at the colleges with 2 year requirements the competitive students will have 3 years, at the colleges with 3 years requirement, the competitive students will have 4 years. It just depends if you feel the rest of your application is so good a weak element will be overlooked, or if you are applying to colleges where you shouldn’t have a weak element. Student govt is very valuable also so it wouldn’t be great to give that up, too bad it is a class period I suppose. The least valuable class is the AP Psych, the Spanish is a core class compared to that elective. Basically you want 4 elective classes instead of a core. Drop Pych, Econ, or Gov in that order imo. But do what you want, realize you can’t apply for colleges that want 3 years, is all (well it’s been done, but odds way against you.)

Spanish is useful in the U.S. But doing any language teaches your brain something, and it also teachers you insights to the culture and thinking patterns of other countries… And having another year will reinforce what you have learned so far and takes you further into usefullness. My daughter didn’t really enjoy doing Spanish either, but was lucky enough to do an immersion month in another country just before Jr year and that changed everything. Fluency, ability, attitude, enjoyment.

Thank you all so much. I think I will drop AP Psych and take Spanish 3 instead

I agree. Without AP Psych, you may still apply to most, if not all, schools you want to. Without a 3rd (or even 4th) year of the same world language will limit your school choice down the road.

FWIW: Most selective colleges do not give credit for AP Psych, so it’s a course you should consider dropping.

Have you taken AP Spanish? Unless you have received a 4 or 5 on the AP Spanish exam, you will be required to take 1 to 2 years of a foreign language at the college level, depending upon the school you attend. They best way to avoid (or shorten) a college foreign language requirement is to take AP Spanish and score a 5 on the exam.
