Do I select AP Physics 1&2 in 11th grade or 12th grade?

My son took AP Art History and AP Literature and enjoyed them very much. He also had Calculus AB and BC, Physics C, AP Chem, Organic Chem and Biochem. Taking those classes had no impact on anyone’s perception of his rigor.

Thanks for your advice! I will take AP Calculus BC in 11th grade, and multivariable (honor) in the 12th grade. and then AP stats in the 11th or the 12th grade. I hope it is rigorous enough for maths. I will try my best to get high GPA。

for the EC part, I am trying to be selected in the varsity tennis next semester. I joined a couple of clubs, but no leadership. My school doesn’t require volunteer hour. If I do some volunteer work, does it increase my opportunity be accepted?

In that scenario, Statistics is absolutely ok, if it interests you.

What math class are you taking right now?
Taking AP physics senior year is perfectly fine.
CSA AND data structures are nice electives but they shouldn’t replace core classes (briefly: you should have English, Math, science, social science, and foreign language every year. For details look at the thread pinned at the top of the High school forum on this website.)

My opinion is that if you’re that far ahead in math you should take Physics C.

Currently, I am taking pre-calculus (honor).

This only thing I missed is that this year for social study I took regular sociology (1 semester) and regular econ (1 semester). I am foolish. But I have world history in 9th, and AP US history in the 11th and then something else in the 12th. I just hope the social course this year won’t mess up my application, although it is still 4 years social science.

If you’re going to have BC in 11th, and have already taken regular Physics, just wait until 11th or 12th and take C. Taking 1/2 is a waste that pushes stuff that could be more useful, more interesting, or both, out of the way.

You’re way ahead of the game, and stressing too much about the minutiae. The reality is that you will amass a good record, and at the most popular schools, your odds will still be long. That’s OK. There are LOTS of schools where people end up with very successful careers. Don’t forget to enjoy the process along the way.

So, you’re taking Precalculus Honors in 10th?
What’s the path at your HS, AB-> BC, or EITHER AB OR BC?

You’re okay with the social science classes you chose. Don’t worry about it.
AP US, then a year of AP social science/history (Euro, Gov…)

Where are you with your foreign language?
What science are you taking right now?
If you take Physics C senior year, what science will you take in 11th grade?

For maths, I am taking precalculus Honor in the 10th and then AP calculus BC and then multivariable (or AP stats or both) in the 12th grade. For social study, I am taking AP US in the 11th, but I am not sure taking AP Gov or AP Econ in the 12th grade is more helpful. Personally, I am more interested in AP Econ, but I guess it is easier than AP Gov. Also, I am taking regular Econ for one semester this year, I am not sure if I take AP Econ in the 12th grade will make it bad for the AO. Do I take something more difficulty or more interesting but easier?

I take spanish Honor classes at school.

I am going to take Chemistry Honor in the 11th (which is required). If I take AP physics 1&2 in the 11th with Chemistry Honor, then it is double science. my teacher said seldom students do that, but it can be done. I am not sure if I take double science, it will make it more challenging and increase the possibility of acceptance if I have AP Physics score by submitting the application.

Students do double AP science all the time.

Again, why 1/2 when you can take C? It seems your quest is to impress admissions committees. If that’s the case, they will be looking for Physics C. In fact, with that level of math, it will stand out if you don’t have C.

I would suggest another tactic though…take what you want to take. Too many students miss great opportunities to pursue things that they find interesting, because they’re trying to read someone else’s mind. Don’t be so focused down the road. Enjoy the journey.

I don’t know much about UMich but I doubt doubling up on science classes will help. I agree with @eyemgh that taking AP Physics C may. It is considered the most challenging course at most high schools. No one but yourself here can answer the question whether you’ll likely do well in that class. Besides your level of mathematical preparation, your readiness for physics is about whether or not you have what physicists call “physical intuitions”. Since you have already taken a regular physics course, you should be in a good position to judge yourself. My S took Physics C (both mechanics and E&M) as his first ever physics class, with my encouragement because I knew he had good “physical intuitions”.

Not all schools offer Physics c though.

Don’t think of it terms of “impressive”: adcoms won’t be impressed because they’ve seen it all. They DO want to see coherence.
Your choices must make sense.

Precalculus Honors-> calculus BC → MVC makes sense.
Precalculus Honors → calcAB → calculus BC also makes sense.
Takings Stats as a senior math doesn’t make sense because AP stats is for strong students who won’t/can’ttake calculus (or have run put of math classes to take). You could take Stats as an elective of course. However, a CS elective would make more sense than stats based on the majors you’re thinking of.

You need an experimental science each of 11th and 12th grade.

AP English language is important for your writing skills so consider it for either 11th or 12th grade.

Taking regular econ as a sophomore makes sense if you take 2 other social science classes in 11th and 12th (APUSH and AP gov would be 100% good, AP Euro, AP Psych…) and you certainly won’t be faulted for that choice.

The OP’s does. It’s why I suggested it.

It seems incongruous to have BC, let alone MVC and not Physics C.

I do want to take AP Econ in the 12th grade. But my counselor said if I take regular Econ in the next semester she wouldn’t recommend me to take AP Econ, because she thinks it is a repeat. If I drop Econ in the next semester, I have only 3.5 social studies. Will that be a problem?

Take a semester-long social studies class in the Spring that’s not regular econ: sociology, American Studies, a history elective, psychology…

Thank you, will talk to the counselor.

Just checked with Counselor, I cannot replace econ with others…

If I choose duel social study in the 12th grade, will that be helpful? But if that is the case, I can only take 1 math course in the 12th grade. For the STEM major, which is more important for the application to UMICH? 2 math courses or 2 social studies given the fact that the social study in the 10th grade is too easy.

Does it mean you MUST take Econ this Spring, or that you must take it befire graduation?

What 2 maths?
You need precalculus and calculus, in succession. You do not need any other math for STEM.

If you take dual enrollment classes, what is available?

Please understand it’s not just the number of the classification (ap or not) but the exact class that matters.

I can take Econ this spring. or I can drop it and take AP Econ in the 12th grade, but then I have only 1 semester of social study in the 10th grade, I don’t know how bad it is.

The 2 maths on my list for the 12th grade is Multivariable and AP stats, I will take AP calculus BC in the 11th grade.

I am thinking if I keep Econ this year, then I take AP Econ and AP Gov and Multivariable/AP stats in the 12th grade. If I drop Econ (with only 1 semester of regular social study in the 10th grade), then take AP Econ & Multivariable & AP stats in the 12th grade. I am not sure which one if better.
