Do I send in an update?

Just recently, I placed 3rd at state in debate. I have no idea if this information is worth sending in or not to my regular decision schools, as decisions are coming out next week. Seems like it doesn’t really matter, but I just am wondering what I should do. Thanks!

I think you should email your schools informing them of this wonderful achievement. its worth it ,and it will probably increase your chances. You may regret not sending it while you had the opportunity. Seize it and make the best use of it now the opportunity lasts.

Personally, I’d say don’t update. If it were nationals, then that may be worth updating.

However, if you end up being waitlisted - then I suggest you send an interest letter and include this achievement.

Regardless, congratulations!!

schools also consider state achievements. What’s the harm in sending it in. the worst possible scenario is that some schools may not get to read the email before the decisions are released.

@chimi123‌ I never said they didn’t. I’m just asking - is it REALLY worth it to contact colleges over this achievement? If it were nationals, there’d be no question about it. I don’t want to undermine OP’s achievement, but this is third place in states. On other threads on CC, students who WON state championships were told to not bother the adcom unless it was regarding the waitlist.

If OP were to contact Harvard or some other Ivy League schools about this, they’d probably see this as a pointless update & would ignore it. If it were another top tier school, same deal. It’s not like they don’t have millions of other (more serious) issues to deal with regarding other applicants, especially in the weeks leading to a decision.

Yeah, fine - maybe I just think that out of courtesy you shouldn’t be contacting adcoms over an update that isn’t national level (or higher). At worst, it’ll be viewed as annoying/pointless but it’s not like they’ll say “Ok, we accepted this guy but they bothered us so they’re going to the reject pile!”

So if OP wants to (just to make sure they don’t have any regrets later on) they should. It could help with a potential waitlist, as I already mentioned.

hmmmmn

I think at this point decisions are made.

Thanks! @chimi123 and @noemii I think I will just hold off on emailing them. But, I think if I am waitlisted, I will then email them with an update.

There is an identical thread to this

You are welcome!
