My 9th grade year was a joke. I got C's and D's on standard(no honors or upper lvl) classes. My GPA was a 2.8, is there a chance I can still get into Columbia? Lets just say I straightened up during 10th and 11th grade with a 3.8+.

Did I dig a hole too deep or is there still a chance? My HS isn't competitive at all and top 10% of class isn't out of the question.

Everyone has a chance, the only way you can be truely taken out of consideration is by not applying.
If you’re just going on to your sophomore year, you have lots of time to build up your resume. Good luck!

Being realistic, you stand a SLIM chance at best. Look at the decisions thread and you will see how competitive Ivy schools are. Good luck though… and fujoshi is right… you can’t get in if you don’t apply.

with outstanding essays and extracurriculars, you could do it!

i don’t think your freshman year has done irreparable damage. That being said, it’s gonna be pretty hard to get into columbia in your spot. you need to get serious about school, do super well, and have a great extracurricular resume. i’m assuming your school doesn’t send many kids to ivies/top schools given the information you’ve provided, so that’s actually a plus for you, if you can do exceptionally well, since your competition will be limited and you will stand out further from your peers.
