My Freshman year of High School was a really hard time for me. I was depressed and insecure and overall just really awkward and lost. My family was fighting constantly, my sister came out of the closet, and I turned to food and sometimes purging for comfort. But after therapy and a lot of self help books, I got my act together. Because of my bad attitude and unhappiness, my grades obviously suffered.

I am obviously bummed out about my Freshman year but the past is gone. There is nothing I can do now but try my hardest. I didn’t do much my Freshman year except JV Indoor Track and a really small part in the School Musical, but I now run Cross Country, Indoor, and Outdoor track and participate in my Dance Committee. I also work part time as a Cashier.

Does anyone know if Bowdoin would still consider me? I love the school because of its academics but also because of its whole atmosphere. I would love to know if I stand a chance or what I can do to better my chances even now.

I can definitely relate. Issues of depression and anxiety brought me to a residential treatment center for 9 and a half months during the second half of my sophomore year and first half of my junior year. Freshman year, I had a 3.72 GPA unweighted with four honors classes and one regular class. Prior to being sent away during my sophomore year, during the first semester, I had a 3.69 unweighted with 1 AP and 3 honors. During my time away, I had a 3.93 GPA unweighted with a couple of APs, no honors, and the rest regular. Finishing up my junior year back home, I had a 3.68 GPA unweighted with only 1 AP and 1 honors. And now, finally I am a senior, but my grades have declined slightly to a 3.58. My SAT is a 2170 (640 CR, 730 M, 800 W). I am applying EDII to Bowdoin and I’m worried that I won’t get in because of my time away from home and my slightly declining grades. I’d say for you, most colleges are looking for an upward trend in grades as high school progresses. Yours definitely seem to have that upward trend. Take either the SAT or the ACT and see how you do on them. But keep in mind that Bowdoin is test optional. Good luck during the rest of your time in high school, keep those grades up and you’ll definitely have a shot!

I also had low grades in ninth grade and not great grades in tenth, but I improved a lot over the four years and I got into Bowdoin. It won’t hold you back.

stop asking people to see if you have a chance. what random people say who have absolutely no idea what goes through the head an admission officer when they are making their decisions is not going to help. if you want an example, look at all the people who posted their stats and got rejected or deferred after everyone said that the person had a really good shot at getting in. stop posting your grades publicly, and especially don’t tell people about your emotional problems. did it ever pop into your head that admissions officers might take a look at these pages too…

Nice lalalapo. lots of sympathy there…ever have to deal with a teen with severe depression and suicide?!

Emily, your grades your freshman year are wonderful! Your perception of competence and excellence is way off, honey. I fear you will make yourself crazy like that. Relax a bit and try to find the college that will be best for you. Once you apply, trust in the process and that the admissions committee will be looking at Emily and whether she is a good fit, and not just at one or two grades. Don’t make endless excuses for the occasional blip that is the mark of being a human being. Be proud of your record and show them that YOU are much more than your superb grades.

(By the way, making excuses for an occasional B or C is not necessary. In fact doing do so may work against you in that you may give someone the impression that your high school is so easy that no one gets anything less than an A.)

Emilylou, the advice from storytimes is sound and compassionate. Relax and best of luck with Bowdoin.

you’re grades are great…admissions will see how you’ve improved throughout your high school life. do you have any test scores?

Can people chance me?!?1? :)
