I’m in both AP Spanish, and French 1, and I’m fluent in Hindi, am learning Arabic outside of school, and know a little bit of Pashto, Panjabi, and Sindhi.
I know it looks good to stick to a few languages and learn them thoroughly, but with Hindi, Pashto, Panjabi, and Sindhi I grew up learning them, so it wasn’t really a choice. I just never really decided to strengthen those languages. But will this look good on a college application?
There is a space on the common application specifically for languages where you list the languages you know and if you read/write/speak it. It will be a nice and unique addition to your overall application, but I don’t think it will make a difference between admission/rejection.
Of course being multilingual looks good. As does playing a musical instrument or being talented at a sport or mastering an art. Why would you think otherwise? And it even sounds like there may be an interesting essay in why you grew up speaking so many languages - something that will differentiate you from the crowd of musicians, athletes and artists. So take your gift and make the most of it.
Being multilingual is considered a must in today’s global community. If you can speak a language and can write in it, mention it. It can only help you.
