Do Miracles Happen at American?

I applied to American U as a Broadcast Journalism Major. I realize that I’m a long shot…but could you give me your opinion on my chances for admission. How much does diversity play in admissions?

your SAT is pretty low for their standards but you have great activities and being a first generation is a plus. Also, they need a more diverse student body so being an African-American helps

I applied as a Psychology major so I’m waiting too. Good luck! :)

thank you! I’m anxiously awaiting a decision.

bump…

Improving your SAT score is going to be critical for having a shot at admission. Hopefully scores from your second time will be better. Good luck!

So…I just retook my SAT and my composite looks like this…

Reading: 540
Math:460
Writing:530

Minimal Increase…

My friend got into American with a 1620 SAT score and was top 10% in my high school with a 3.9 GPA and she got a scholarship and lots of financial aid. She had cancer as a young child, and honestly I think she got in because of that reason. She likes the school a lot, she’s a freshmen and says the school is challenging.
I wish you the best of luck!

I know a different friend who applied with a 3.9 GPA and a 1590 SAT and she didn’t get in. But American is a great school so I hope you get in!!!

American University just reported a 12% increase in their RD applications over last year and
a large increase in their ED applications. Their current upward trend in number of applications and credentials of current applicants, together with sound financial management and terrific faculty suggest that American University will be even more competitive for admission this year and beyond. It worth a shot, but realistically without
higher SAT scores, you would need a truly compelling situation to generate a favorable admission decision

Are you relying on financial or merit aid? This year ED candidates could apply SAT optional. If comparing aid packages is not a priority and AU is your top choice, ED, if they continue with SAT optional next year, could be a consideration.

Thanks all of you for your suggestions and advice. Hello5, I’m relying on finanical aid. I really hope that I get in.I think that DC would be the ideal place for me to major in communications. I live in Philly, which is good because it’s only a days trip away. Do any of you know when their Decision letters go out? They said by April 1st, but I’m expecting it sooner.

bump…

Really can’t remember from last year, but I know my S got an email first.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is exceedingly unlikely that with an SAT of that standing you should get in; if your GPA was higher then yes, you had a shot.

I hope I am proved wrong, and I hope you rub it in my face if you do get in, but having gone through this two years ago, and now seeing how the competition has increased… not likely.
