Some internationals do come with their parents, most I think do not. If your parents would like to come, and the cost of an additional ticket is not an issue for your family, there’s little reason for them not to come.
Btw, I didn’t have my parents come with me; I had 51kg of luggage, and had to fly 32 hours.

hey that’s what I was wondering too! my parents are quite insistent on going… i think it’s actually because they want to tour us. but I think most schools that have those buses from airports on move-in day only allow students not families.

I was wondering that too…my mum really hates flying so I have no idea how I’m going to get all my luggage there o.O I mean if I had 51kg of luggage (which is probably not even enough for all my stuff) to carry on my own…I’d have to carry more than I weigh :/

At my college I would estimate that about half of all international students arrive with their parents. That seems to be primarily a financial decision: students on financial aid tend to arrive on their own, whereas students who pay the $50,000 sticker price tend to be accompanied by their families.

At my college parents may help you move into your room, take a campus tour and grab a bite to eat - but then they are asked to leave campus for the remainder of the orientation program. I hear that many other colleges do the same because they have had problems with “velcro parents” who won’t leave their kid’s side.

If your parents want to join you and finances are not an issue, I highly recommend that you arrive a few days early, get a room in a hotel and explore the area together (or travel the country or…). That makes the trip more worthwhile for your family and they will be ready to depart on move-in day.

To those concerned about luggage: I traveled alone with 2 big suitcases, a carry-on and a backpack. It worked out surprisingly well. There are luggage carts at the airport and I got help from other students at my dorm. The one suggestion I do have is to take a taxi or limo or airport shuttle from the airport to your college. Try to avoid public transportation (buses, trains…) with that much luggage.
