Do non-scholarship kids receive the same opportunities as those on scholarship?

I was accepted to Viterbi and received a small scholarship with my financial aid package, but not anything like Trustee or Presidential. I really want to go to USC anyway, but I’m worried that I won’t feel valued there or receive the same opportunities as scholarship kids. Can anyone attest to whether or not this is likely to happen? Thanks!

In answer to you thread title, “Do non-scholarship kids receive the same opportunities as those on scholarship?”

No, not even close. It is repeated over and over on here how scholarship kids are treated golden - they get early everything -signups, registrations, special invitations and connections for all kinds of events and opportunities that are not public, this includes access to internships and research others will never see. One of ours has a big scholarship, but I always thought all the posts on here (from parents whose kid graduated 10 years ago and still proclaiming the scholarship they got every chance they get) seemed insensitive to others that are getting no merit aid, which means no benefits. So feeling like you do is understandable. In this case it is just like a public school, get in a crowded line for advising, class registration, fight for internships, etc, but a bit better cause it is private. But USC is getting so big, trying to get classes is more like a public school nowadays. But also in this way it is like any other school the scholarship kids are obviously valued, the others are there to pay the freight. So will you feel value there - that is to be determined by you and your personal experience, will you receive the same opportunities as scholarship kids? No. That’s why people say go to the school that wants you. The perks are sweet.

We know several Trustee and above recipients, and yes they have additional benefits and opportunities. One of the most well known being special Presidential/above scholarship-only housing in Birnkrandt.

Congratulations on your acceptance to Viterbi and the scholarship you received! Once you are there, you will have many opportunities to apply for further scholarships, research, and so much more. You will have classes with students from full pay to full tuition and everyone will mix in and be busy. Although scholarship students are offered perks named in the above posts, they may or may not take advantage of them, just as you may or may not take advantage of everything that is offered to you, Enjoy!

Maybe Viterbi does things differently, but there are only a few perks of being a T/P scholar in Dornsife. You register by seniority (number of completed credit hours), not scholar status. Those with more AP/Dual enrollment credits as freshman will register before those without (second semester registration- first semester done at orientation which also doesn’t discriminate based on scholarship status). There is no jump to the head of the line for scholarship students. The only ones who bipass the seniority status are athletes who really do need to schedule around their practice schedules.

The vast opportunities USC offers are available for ALL students who are engaged enough to search them out and persistent enough to pursue them. For example, D wasn’t handed research opportunities in Dornsife- she had to search out labs, ask if they were taking new students, interview with the lab, etc… This was all done on her own and all students can do the same thing. I don’t think she was EVER asked if she was a T/P scholar for any extra curricular activity at USC, and she didn’t ask anyone this as a leader of organizations either.
