Do other admissions officers know which other Ivies you applied to?

I heard that other Ivy League schools know which other Ivy League's you apply to and your chances are lowered if you applied to a lot of other Ivies (say 3-4+)...is this true?

The Ivies are not allowed to share information about applicants with each other. There was a court case a while ago … so they legally can not.

PS - they can share information about accepted students such as students accepted ED.

thanks a lot! what a relief :)

Like much folklore, this false rumor may have an element of truth, however.

The mindset that would lead a student to apply to 7-8 of the Ivies (plus Stanford and maybe MIT), is very much not the mindset Ivy admissions departments are looking for. Their model of how the world should work is an applicant does thoughtful research to determine where he or she will fit best, and be most challenged, and applies to a selected portfolio of colleges like that, not a broad-brush, maximize-your-chances-of-a-high-prestige-admit strategy. And I suspect they are pretty good at telling who is who from reading the applications. Of course, they still admit a number of apply-all-Ivies candidates, if they are really strong, but at the margins they are probably poorly disposed towards applicants whom they suspect are that kind of applicant.
