hello,
I will be attending a school that is out of state. I am for sure within need for need based financial aid. My question is, will they give a good amount, or will they barley give me any due to me being out of state?
When will you be attending this school?
Is this a public or private school? Did you run the Net Price Calculator on the school’s website?
I’ll be attending in the Fall 0f 2020.
So…you were already accepted? Did you use the NPCs? Can you please provide more information?
What college?
The vast majority of public universities do not meet full need for all accepted students…so there is no guarantee you will get any grant money.
Most OOS students at public universities will not see aid that makes up the difference between in and out of state rates.
Some colleges have need based aid initiatives for low income accepted students (e.g Michigan). UVA, and UNC meet need for all students if you get accepted. Michigan comes close.
Are you applying to a college that is affordable? Or are you hoping that you will get a lot of grant money…
How much aid do you need? Where are you applying? You will get much better answers with specific schools. What is your parent annual income? Have you run the net price calculators for your colleges?
If you are hoping to get a LOT of grant money from UNLV as a transfer student…the answer is likely NO…this isn’t likely to happen.
And NO you can’t get instate residency for tuition purposes because you live with your aunt…so put that idea right out of your head.
You will likely be paying the full out of state tuition amount. You will be eligible for the Direct Loan. $6500 for second year…$7500 for third year.
What is the matter with a UC or Cal State? Is there one within commuting distance of your home?
Are you eligible to receive the Calgrant?
Have you made an application to UNLV? Have you been accepted? Have you filled out FAFSA? Have you gotten a financial aid package and a statement of cost of attendance? Have you researched what UNLV’s rules are for getting instate tuition?
The answers to all of the above are likely “NO”.
Before you get too set in your plans, start with that last question. You need to look up and read up on UnLV’s In state tuition requirements. If you are not an independent student defined as over age 24, a veteran, have a dependent, married, ward of state, homeless, you are still dependent on your parent’s finances as well as your own for financial aid, and likely for state residency requirements when it comes to in state tuition.
I do not know what the rules are for UNLV’s in state tuition. You have to look up this info to see if it is possible for you to get state residency for tuition purposes on the university’s web site. State residency for library privileges, car registration, driver’s license, tax purposes do not entitle you to a state school’s rates most of the time. There are specific rules for that.
You also need to apply for the transfer, get accepted, apply for financial aid , see what you get, and check if any merit money is available for transfers and how to apply for it
Usually OOS schools are not generous in giving dependent students in state tuition the way you are thinking of getting it. There usually is very little money from the school for financial aid or scholarship for OOS transfers. The federal government has PELL if you are eligible and the Direct Loans.
So you need to do some research about all of this. Good luck
It takes 12 months of living in Nevada for purposes other than education to count as a resident. You will not get financial aid from UNLV- they make no promise to ‘meet need’ for OOS students. You can borrow `$5-7K per year through FAFSA. The rest of the $20+ tuition is on you (plus room and board, of course).
@collegemom3717, can a dependent student even get in state residency? A lot of rules are school specific so OP has to read the ones specific to UNLV. No idea if OP is independent (by UNLV, if it matters), is PELL eligible ).
Good question, @cptofthehouse- I don’t think so, but agree that OP has to do some more homework. From another post it looks as though the OP is trying to find a back up plan b/c of problems w/ UC transfers.
What is your GPA now that you are using to transfer? If you can’t get aid from your own instate publics, why would you think an OOS public would give you more aid?
And again I ask…are you Calgrant eligible?
Have you run the Net Price Calculator on that school’s website?
Likely you would not receive grants. The school charges OOS rates because your family does not pay taxes there.
Why can’t you apply to a Calif school? If you have need, won’t you get a Cal Grant?
