I know that's a weird question, but I've heard people at WashU wear other college apparel more than people at a lot of other schools too. I really want to go somewhere where people are proud of their school. Input anyone?

I don’t think it’s a weird question, I just think it’s a weird thing to “hear” from someone. I have not noticed this to be phenomenon on campus, and I doubt students here wear other colleges’ apparel to a greater extent than do students at other colleges. I will wear a Penn or Northwestern or ASU hoodie sometimes, but only because new hoodies are expensive and I got those when visiting colleges back in the day (thanks mom). If someone is wearing another college’s stuff, it’s probably because they haven’t done laundry in awhile more than anything else.

I was actually having a similar conversation with a friend a couple weeks ago, whereby we commented “if people didn’t have Wash U t-shirts, everyone would walk around shirtless.” Beyond the “official” stuff at the bookstore which you’ll get every once in awhile, there are SO many free t-shirts given various events and student groups… you seriously end up getting a new t-shirt every other week. In terms of “brands,” Wash U-branded stuff is probably the most commonly worn brand on campus. Wash U students have A LOT of school pride – driven not necessarily (actually very little) by the athletic teams but instead by the fact that Wash U is just an awesome place and people love going to school here. I make a point to wear my Wash U gear when I’m back home.

When I visited, I saw everyone wearing WashU t-shirts. idk who you heard that from, but that wasn’t my experience. Everyone was very proud of their school, and people would yell out “Come to WashU!” whenever they saw us prefrosh.

I would agree with vbball90’s post, most people only wear other college shirts/sweatshirts because they’ve owned them from senior year; personally, the only one I feel doesn’t deserve a place on campus is hopkins =P

I think that another part of it though may just come from the fact that we’re D3; while lots of people will go to the bookstore and buy the official WashU sweatshirts for fifty-some dollars, lots of people are satisfied with free rescollege shirts and maybe the $12 WU Pride Shirt (It’s in St. Louis Dammit). People aren’t obsessed with buying all the memorabilia they can find to parade at a tailgate party, but that doesn’t mean we don’t care about our school–our pride is just less externalized. Ask any student how they like WashU, and you won’t worry about school pride.
