Do people often send in sat subject scores with their ACT scores?

I have never taken the SAT, only the ACT. When i start filling out applications, i’ll be sending in my ACT scores. I notice that sometimes it is said that subject scores are not “necessary” when not being sent in alongside an SAT score. Is that true? I’d assume that most ACT takers would also be sending in subject scores, but recent web searches have made it hard to clarify this.

Subject tests are not usually required for college apps (there are certainly some schools that require them but only a few). I also know some few schools require you to submit ALL SAT or ALL ACT scores. Perhaps that was the case here (submitting ACT so no SAT info required)?

This varies by school. Some request ACT or SAT/SAT Subject tests, some request ACT AND SAT Subject tests, some ask for no Subject tests. Mine sent different scores to different schools - depending on what they require/recommend. Took SAT, ACT and several SAT subject tests. Sent ACT to all, subject tests to some.

MA2012, that is helpful information. so it is ultimately up to the school i am applying to; what should be considered is the school’s own preference and policy.

  1. Majority of colleges do not even use subject test scores to determine admission.
  2. The following are the only colleges left that actually require subject tests (two) for all or most freshman applicants: Cornell, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, McGill. MIT, and Cooper Union (for engineering applicants, the majority of its applicants). There are a number of other colleges that require them only if you are home-schooled or applying to some special program like one that is a combined undergrad and graduate program and require them in those situations regardless of whether you submit ACT or SAT. There were in the past a number of colleges that required subject tests if you submitted SAT but not ACT, but only McGill (in Canada) is left in that category as all the others with that rule have dropped the requirement to submit subject tests. Cornell, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, MIT and Cooper Union (for engineering) require two subject tests regardless of whether you submit SAT or ACT.
  3. There are a number of colleges that recommend subject tests, a number of which previously required them. Those include (there might be some others): Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Princeton, Penn, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Rice, Georgetown (the only college that recommends three subject tests, the others just two), Georgia, Delaware, Emory, Lafayette, Webb, Duke and UCs (some of the UCs and for some majors). Duke recommends them if you submit SAT but not ACT, except engineering still recommends them even then. The other colleges recommend them regardless of whether you submit SAT or ACT.
  4. There are a number of colleges that neither require nor recommend subject tests but will consider them if provided, and they consider them regardless of whether you submit SAT or ACT. and those include: Columbia, Amherst, UChicago, Virginia, Vassar, Wake Forest, Bowdoin, Wellesley, Weslayan, Worcester Polytechnic, Washington U in St Louis, Vassar, Vanderbilt, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Swarthmore, Stevens, Smith, Scripps BU, BC, Rensallear, Reed, Pomona, Claremont, William & Mary, Occidental, Oberlin,Conneticutt, Davidson, Franklin Olin, GWU, Case Western, Bucknell, Carleton, Bates, Babson, Ithaca, JHU, Kenyon, Macalester, Pratt, NC, and Union.
  5. There also a small number of colleges such as NYU and Middlebury that accept subject tests (three for those two colleges) if you do not want to submit any SAT or ACT.

In other words as to your particular question about whether submitting the ACT rather than SAT voids any requirement, recommendation, or consideration of subject tests, there appears to be only McGill and partly Duke in that category still left.

@drusba I’m looking at Duke’s site and I can’t find anything that recommends submitting subject tests along with the ACT for students applying to Pratt. Here’s the language on their site:

https://admissions.duke.edu/application/instructions#testing

ACT
For students who choose to submit the ACT with writing, Duke will consider the highest composite score and highest scores on each section, regardless of test date, but will not recalculate the composite score. Students who take the ACT are not required to submit SAT or SAT Subject Test scores. Our school code for the ACT is 3088.

SAT
For students who submit SAT scores, two SAT Subject Tests are strongly recommended. Students who have taken the test multiple times may choose which scores to send to Duke. Duke will use the highest available scores in each section, plus the two highest Subject Test scores, regardless of the date those tests were taken. Our school code for the SAT is 5156.
Students intending to enter in the fall of 2018 and beyond will be required to submit the new SAT.
Applicants to the Pratt School of Engineering who take the SAT are strongly recommended to take one SAT Subject Test in Mathematics (level 1 or level 2). Applicants to the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences who take the SAT may take any two SAT Subject Tests. For complete information about the use of SAT Subject Test scores in foreign language placement at Duke, please visit Languages at Duke.

Stevens requires the SAT subject tests in Math (Level I or II) and chemistry or biology for the accelerated chemical biology/premedical program (7 year program with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School).
