Do people really spend a lot of time off campus hanging out/visiting friends?

For example, if you went to UCLA, do people actually go to downtown LA/beach to chill on a frequent basis? What about visiting their friends in other colleges, like UCSB and UCSD and irvine(still assuming that you went to UCLA). Basically my question is if people go further than 30 minutes away from campus to chill/visit people on a regular basis.......

because

My parents say that there is so many things to do on campus/you still have to study that you don't go off the campus/immediately surrounding cities too often...is this true? Because I am deciding between Berkeley and UCLA, and I have friends down at ucsd, uci, ucsb......and downtown LA, and beaches sound cooll....

Thanks!

Well all my friends go to UCLA one goes to UCI. They hardly have a chance to visit due to a lack of transportation. With Westwood, all the activities on campus, and events for their sorority, my friends at UCLA are constantly busy.

When they (UCLA and UCI friends) do finally find time that works for them all, they end up going to Beverly Hills, the mall, or out to lunch. Since traffic is horrible in LA they hardly have time to really visit, because of the long trip back to Irvine for my friend.

^You've hit the nail on the head...traffic. It's not worth traveling to see each other because of traffic, the beaches are crowded (a REALLY good beach trip is an all-day affair)...etc.

i've found that you only go off campus if your life on campus sucks

id say for me i definetly go into the city of boston more frequently than the poster seems like he would at UCLA but thats cause im so close and its actually really accessible.

but no, no one really visits people at other schools ALL the time unless theyre miserable at their school or dont have good friends there. i visited two friends are northeastern once first semester, it was fun, but i couldnt imagine frequently going there to hang out on friday/sat nights. ive visited NYU 2/3 times this year becuase its so close to me when i go home thats its convienient. all other visits i wanted to make wouldve been a one time deal because of the distance and because i dont want to spend all my time at other colleges and no time at mine.
