Do roomates in college usually become your best friend?

My first year, no. I was friendly, we communicated when we had to but it was almost like a business relationship. My second year, yes, we became close friends but we had opposite living styles so we had lots of conflict. I preferred the first one as I’m a very private person.

H is still friends with one of his college roommates and a couple of suitemates.

D never really meshed with her roommate and then became an RA so she wouldn’t have to have a roommate any more.

Middle son didn’t really interact with his first roommate. Second year, he went into a suite. Something happened mid year (I think one of the suitemates slipped him drugs to which he had a bad reaction) and he stopped talking to one of his suitemates. The next year, he got a random roommate but kind of freaked out a couple of weeks in so I moved him to a single. He had a single after that. Sadly, he never really recovered and wound up dropping out.

S17 is at a school which allows students to change rooms/roommates at mid-year. To stay together, both roommates have to agree. S17 stayed with his roommate. They are not best friends, but S17 says he is a great guy, they often eat meals together and socialize occasionally. S17 is now considering options for next year. He is hoping for a suite with some other guys. He would definitely room with his current roomie and will if the boy isn’t chosen to be an RA. S17 wanted to apply to be an RA but it’s discouraged in his BFA program.
