Do SAT percentiles matter ?

I did the January SAT and got a score of 1480.
My percentiles were:
Nationally Representative Sample Percentile - 99
Your SAT User Percentile - National - 98
Do they matter at all, or colleges only look at the scores ?

              I think it is useful for you to see just how many students are in that top 2% in raw numbers. You would think that being in the top 2, or even 1, would be amazing until you realise how many of them there are out there. What matters is what you look like in comparison with your peers at your HS and those your target university.
