Is a highschool student able to win a scholarship? If so, is it possible to keep it for future use in college/university?
There are a few scholarships that are awarded for future use in college. But not that many.
The ones I know about pay directly to whatever college the student matriculates to…when the time comes.
If you get this award as a HS student, you will be expected to use it in a timely fashion…in other words…when you attend college after HS graduation.
Thank you for the answer, may i ask where to find those scholarships?
Are you looking for local scholarships…or highly competitive national ones? How much are you looking for in scholarship money.
The fact is…the best scholarships will be awarded to you by the colleges to which you get accepted…assuming you qualify for their scholarships.
I would spend your time getting tippy top grades and SAT or ACT scores…rather than hunting down scholarships for underclass HS students. But that’s my opinion.
I’ll flag @CourtneyThurston who got a lot of scholarships…for her opinion.
Most scholarships state who is eligible to apply (all hs students? just juniors? just senior?). There used to be a Nordstrom scholarship that was just for juniors but I’m pretty sure that is not around anymore.
I’d look locally and see what is available, and then prepare to enter those competitions when you are a senior. There was a scholarship in our area that was a video about safety. Had no idea it existed until ‘Senior Award’ night when someone got it (that that video was so bad almost any other submission could have won). Also essays for an American Legion scholarship, some local photography ones, an art one. Really, those were there for the taking but you had to know about them and submit something. Others required a number of community service hours or working with dogs, or taking certain classes. You can’t do it at the last minute.
There is the Evans Scholarship for golf caddies. You have to do it for 2 years before senior year so it takes a little planning. There was a family in our area that had 4 kids get the scholarships because they knew what was required and had each kid get into the caddie program at the golf course and work for it. A little planning and those parents saved $100 grand per kid.
You won’t be able to apply for most scholarships until late junior/senior year. I’d suggest (if you’re an underclassman) to make a spreadsheet and then apply later. Right now just focus on getting good grades and test scores bc that’ll get you both institutional and outside scholarships (if you apply)
Also be aware that some schools will reduce their institutional aid instead of stacking the scholarships.
As noted, your best bet is doing your best to get high grades and test scores and getting merit awards from the colleges themselves.
Your high school’s web site might have a list of local scholarships. There usually isn’t too much competition for those, but as others have mentioned, they may be one-year-only, they may not stack with other aid given by the colleges, and they’re probably for <$1,500. Still, that’s good money just for writing an essay!
Thank you all for the answers it really helped me and gave a lot to think about, but do you know if the system in the US is similar to the UK system ( regarding scholarships ) ? And if your recommendations work in the UK system?
This is a US website so it’s less likely that people on this forum can help you with UK high school scholarship - related questions.
@Hazel0987 are you a UK citizen?
No i’m a Swedish citizen but considering taking my bachelors in the UK
Welcome to college confidential. I think you will get much better advice if you include all pertinent information in your original posts.
That you are an international student for U.S. schools is very pertinent. Many of the scholarships folks already listed are for U.S. citizens only.
There are a couple of people who have limited knowledge of colleges in the U.K. but again…that is also very pertinent to your question.
IF you happen to apply to colleges in the U.S. eventually you will need to check to see IF they awards scholarships or any aid to international students. Some schools don’t at all.
In terms of “local scholarships”, check your school. But understand that some of these awards can’t be used outside of your country.
How much scholarship money do you need to attend college each year?
Hoping you are also looking at affordable options in Sweden.
So i need around 27 600 pounds ( 36 121 dollars ) for the tuition during all three years of university/college, and i’ll be able to handle the rest of the fees without scholarships.
So you need $36,000 USD per year to attend college? Is that correct?
I can’t even begin to guess whether other country’s colleges will award a person who isn’t a citizen that kind of money…per year. But I’m going to guess…it’s not going to be easy to come by.
Sorry i don’t think i was clear enough when explaining the amount of tuition, each year i’ve to pay 9250 pounds ( 12 094 dollars ). So if i combine the tuition from every that i attend college the total sum would be 27 600 pounds ( 36 088 dollars ), and my main goal is to cover that amount of money using scholarships or at least the majority of it.
College tuition is only $12,000 USD per year in what country? How much are the living expenses (room, food, personal expenses, books, travel to and from school, health insurance)?
I think raising even $12k/year will be difficult. Make sure you have a financial safety lined up in your own country.
The tuition is 12,000 USD in the UK, which is the country i’m planning to study in. Of course i do understand that it will be hard but at least i’m going to apply to as many as i can, the problem is that i can’t find them. There are hardly any i can find for EU students.
In the US, most of the substantial scholarships (full tuition) come from the colleges. Maybe that’s the way it works in the UK too. I wouldn’t expect organizations in the UK to award scholarships to nonresidents.
Can you afford to attend a college in Sweden? Maybe you could do a semester abroad in the UK.
I’m sure there are scholarships for EU students because there are a ton for international students, but i’m struggling to find them. The thing is i don’t want to study in Sweden and would rather study elsewhere ( example UK ), so therefor i try to find scholarships to help me attend college there. And my goal is to take out as little loans as possible.
