My daughter was just notified that she will receive both a Gold Scholarship and a
Presidential scholarship, which is wonderful. Does anyone know if those scholarships will stack on top of any need-based aid, or will the scholarships replace that? Between the two scholarships she will not have a tuition liability, but of course room and board are still expenses to consider.
The merit should not change; however, UMN will take the merit aid into account when determining need-based.
For my child, part of the need based aid was taken away with the scholarships. They took away part of his work study and maybe some of the unsubsidized loan. The subsidized loan was still available. I believe how much of the federal aid they take away depends on how much need the FAFSA says you qualify for. You can call One Stop and they should be able to tell you based on your child if you have filled out the FAFSA. My child has tuition covered for the most part with scholarships, Minnesota grants, and the Opportunity Tax Credit. He is doing work study to help pay for room and board. He could take out his subsidized loan and a Parent Plus loan to pay for the rest if he wanted to. I hope this helps.
@misty88981 How was your daughter notified - email, mail? Could you post her stats?
Last year, UMN didn’t send any honors or scholarship info. by e-mail. D’s honors notification appeared on her Tracker and she received a regular mail invitation. Scholarship information was sent out regular mail in a special envelope - the fatter the better!
She received the scholarship info via the postal service.
Stats-
4.3 weighted GPA
3.98 unweighted
6 AP classes, all 5’s
ACT- 36
SAT- 1560
National Merit Semifinalist
Very helpful. Thank you. We won’t count on need-based aid, but if it comes through, then great!
Thanks for the information. Our daughter has a 4.52 weighted/3.95 unweighted GPA, 11 APs and extra-curriculars but we’re concerned that her 32 ACT composite might keep her out of the running for some of these scholarships. Only time will tell - thanks again!
@ddmull1 - at least a couple of application seasons ago those stats and course load got OOS students the Gold National. That scholarship has since been retooled but not sure if they’ve changed their selection criteria. Hopefully something will come through for your daughter. Not sure if I remember what college she has applied to but if she makes Honors then that tends to be another hint that scholarship money might be forthcoming.
Good luck!
