My school requires freshman and sophomores to take the state standardized test every March. I took it las year, and received good scores for all of the subjects. This year, I'm taking a lot of higher level classes and I would have to miss four days of classes. I also don't really want to take them because I could be doing better things and I don't feel that they are important. Everyone keeps telling me that colleges will look at them because they are on your transcript, but the thing is, every state has a different test and they're hard to compare... Will colleges wonder why I didn't take them? This is my first post so please give me some constructive feed back. Thanks in advance!!

Wait. I thought that standardized tests given by the state are mandatory, which means that you don’t have a choice of whether you want to take it or not. Am I wrong?

Why kind of standardized test it is? If it is not SAT or ACT, it probably has no impact at all for college applications.

You need it to graduate its a state requirement. It’s used to determine the progress of the school and district and is needed for state funding as well. You don’t have a choice.

Yeah, colleges don’t really look at state tests, but you can’t graduate without taking them (and passing)

Soaring eagle, why do you think you can opt out of them. I agree with the above, in our state they are mandatory for certain subjects and grades.

Our school lets people opt out of it with parent consent. The valedictorian this year who is a close friend of mine got out of it and she hasn’t had any difficulties with graduating. I also talked with the counsellor about it and she said I just needed to have my parents call in. Thank you for all or your feed back! I’m hearing that it doesn’t matter too much for college, but I might take it just because its good practice.

You still did not tell us which test is it.

They’re called TCAPS

Dear lord. I would forget about it.

Look, I suggest asking your counselor about it, as my first most important advice.
Ask what happens if you don’t take it.
If colleges actually consider this remotely important
What you would ever need it for… etc.
If not taking it doesn’t do anything important to you, pfft. Rather go to class.

I’ve never heard of it, and googling it doesn’t tell me much, I see no reason why you should take what seems to be a useless test. Most importantly it seems that pronouncing the acronym TCAPS and wondering how much time school administrators spent rearranging words just trying to create an impressive acronym, those would be far more important than taking the test itself.
The SAT and ACT matter, however, and those are far more important to take.
