Do Summer Seminar Squad Leaders make recommendations?

I understand that the purpose of NASS is for students to get a feel for life at the Naval Academy. But, surely, USNA must be looking at least a little bit at the selection of students coming in...right? My son attended last summer and felt that he did very well. He was selected by his squad leader several times to assume leadership roles with the rest of the squad. Does the Squad Leader make a recommendation that carries any weight?

Thanks,
Kat

NASS squad leaders write reports on all the members of their squad. They may only strongly recommend two members.

The recommendations are taken seriously by admissions staff.

Thanks…just the response I was hoping for!

I talked to my BGO and he said the same thing. They write reports that are taken very seriously. Certainly can help

I think you have to look at this in the same way that a BGO report might be considered: It is doubtful that, by itself, a BGO/SS report can get a marginal candidate in; it is more likely that a BGO/SS report can keep a marginal candidate out.

In other words, a top 5% evaluation of a candidate with marginal SATs, etc. would be looked at with skepticism; it MIGHT earn the candidate a second look, but would probably be seen as an aberration.

A bottom quartile evaluation of that same student would probably eliminate the candidate from further consideration.
