Summer Seminar and Admissions

If you get into the Summer Seminar, does that mean that you have a really good chance of getting in? I saw they only take 1800 and only about 40% choose to go there.

Just found another question, Under the list of BGO there is Zip-Codes for example Lt. John Doe
Zip: 304-310, 340

They are the first 3#s of your zip code right?, cause I don't see one for my zip code.

I would say if your example, that the "340" is the zip code, If you cant find your BGO just call the academy, thats what I did for my ALO.

nm, found it, I swear sometimes im dyslexic, or however you spell it

It is my understanding that most plebes have not attended Summer Seminar. But I did read a dissertation study that indicated the attendance at Summer Seminar is a good indicator for a successful completion of Plebe year.

The short answer is not exactly. The purpose of Summer Seminar (NASS) is twofold. First, it serves as a recruiting tool for USNA -- hopefully bringing to USNA highly qualified people who might not otherwise apply. Second, it helps potential candidates decide whether USNA (or any SA) is right for them. There are other benefits to both sides, but these are the main ones.

The standards for NASS aren't as strict as they are for USNA. First, there is no physical or medical component -- it's purely academics. Second, the academic review isn't as stringent. Third, there is no personal (BGO) interview. Fourth, you don't need the nomination component. Still, NASS is highly competitive and, every year, some outstanding students don't get an invitation to attend.

Attending any of the SA summer seminars (and not totally screwing up) gives you a few bonus points during the USNA admissions process on the theory that someone who attended a summer seminar has a better understanding of what a SA is like than someone who did not. However, not attending (even if you're invited) is not a negative b/c the academies recognize there are many reasons that people can't/don't attend.

At the end of the day, there are people who are accepted to and attend NASS that do not get an offer of appointment to USNA. There are many people who do not attend NASS (or another SA program) who are appointed to USNA and do very well.

I encourage people to apply and attend NASS b/c attendance can definitely help you decide if USNA is right for you. However, if for some reason (cost, schedule, etc.), you can't do it, don't worry about it affecting your chances.

Ive looked on the website, but I don't see a application for summer seminar.

you have to wait till the begining of February to apply for NASS

The [url=<a href="http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm%5Dapplication%5B/url">http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm]application[/url</a>] to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar goes online 1 Feb. 2007. Applications to attend NASS are accepted until 30 March 2007. That same application also becomes yoru preliminary application to the academy.
