Do these count as volunteer hours?

Hi,

So I have to be applying for NHS soon and for the volunteer hour portion part of the application I was wondering if the hours that I have worked at my parents business count? I was not paid and helped with running the business and I think it would be great for my application if it counted.

Thank you!

I’m not sure, I’d find the teacher who runs the Honor Society at your school and ask them.

It would count but I’d advise you not to add that it was your parent’s business and not to give away that you only earned that opportunity because your parents allowed you to.

In my experience, working for a family business often doesn’t count for these things (here is a random example I found). Not all unpaid work can be characterized as community service. I agree that you should ask the teacher in charge.

Ask the moderator.

And I wouldn’t try to hide the fact that it’s your parent’s business. Either the hours count or they don’t.

It’s the National HONOR Society… and, yes, I’m the moderator at my school.
