Volunteering at family business, does it count?

My parents own a homecare for elderly folks. That is, taking care of them sort of like a retirement home, but more personal.

I wasn't able to score an internship this summer, so I thought I could just rack up tons of hours just working around the business. I can probably get hundreds of hours by the end of summer.

Will I be able to put this on my college apps? Will it look as good as volunteering at a library or other place? Also on the app should I just not mention it's a family business?

If it is for-profit(i.e your parents make money from it) then you might be able to pass it off as a job at the most. However, if it is a non-profit then you can always put on I mean its better than nothing, but definitely make sure to tell the truth.

You aren’t making money right? Then it should work. If you’re making money, then it could be work experience.

Harvard’s admission website notes…

“For example, a student can gain a great deal from helping his or her family with babysitting or other household responsibilities or working in a restaurant to help with family or personal expenses. Such experiences are important “extracurricular” activities and can be detailed in the extracurricular section and discussed in essays.”

I think on this basis it is suitable to put it under extracurricular activities on the common application. Schools will actually probably value that sort of work experience.

yes.
