Do we have to stay in the residence halls at CalSO?

My mom would rather just stay in a hotel than with other parents in the residence hall. Is this allowed and how do you tell Cal that you wont be staying the in the res. hall?

are you staying the extra night before hand?

I'm sure you probably could. As long as you paid the money, I don't see why they'd care where you go. I'd prefer a nice hotel room too, but I'm a very cheap man.

I think I will be staying in SF the night before but is there really anything I will be missing out on?

Nothing you won't experience on move-in day.

from the CalSO website...

Overnight Program Accommodations
All freshmen and their parents and guests will sleep in a residence hall on the southside of campus. Students room with other students and parents room with their partners or other parents. There are no single rooms and no reduction in fee if you decide not to stay in the residence hall.

How do I get out of staying in the residence hall? Do I have to send in something?

Send an e-mail to calso (askcalso@berkeley.edu) letting them know that you will not being staying in the res hall, but will continue with the orientation program.

Just heads up. Hotel rooms in SF are pretty pricey and crossing our lovely Bay Bridge to get in right before check-in (7 or 8 AM right?) is going to be a *****.

Consider staying at Oakland or Emeryville if you're up to it. Or just get to know that BART schedule :)
