OMG, all this time I thought that I only needed teacher recommendations... crap. ):

Can someone confirm for sure for sure?!

because my counselors in the school never even talk to the students and only talk to the troubled ones... and when they do have conversations with students about checks, they do them in groups. they don't bother to take the time to know students. gahhhhh. ):

Yes, you need it. It is mostly for the counselor to say that you have been a good student (don't have disciplinary problems) and to verify the rest of your app.

The counselor also fills out info about your HS: % kids who go to 4-year colleges, % kids who qualify for reduced lunch, advanced coursework available, etc. Lots of metrics, not so much about your character

most privates require a counselor recommendation (he or she fills out a rec letter and the secondary school report for common app) and you choose 2 other teachers to fill out letters of rec and their respective forms.
