Do you bring your computer to college?

I built my own computer and I want to take it to college but my frikken parents are telling me to leave it home because they think it's not normal to take it there plus I get a laptop. I bought all the parts and built my computer my self and I really don't want to just leave it home plus I want to use my laptop for pure work and my computer for anything else.

So should I bring my computer to college? Did you guys do it?

Bring your computer.

Students bring their desktops.

If u want to bring it, then bring it. It’s where you’re going to be 3/4 of the year.

Ok I’ll try but I have no clue how I can fit this huge thing into the car with all my other stuff lol

Plenty of students bring their desktops to college. If you’re dorming, be aware that it will take up a reasonable amount of room, but it’s certainly not abnormal to bring one.

Is your college in driving distance of home? Why don’t you hold off for your initial dropoff, then bring it later if you can? It could be a hassle to bring it to/from each year, and if you have a laptop, maybe you should just wait and see if you have room, or if you would even spend any time on it after the first few weeks.

Make room. If you set aside the front seat for fragiles, you can place it there.

Why fight with his parents about it? What other items would you take TWO of to college? I say leave it home for now, and take it later if it makes sense. Why have one computer for “work” and one for everything else?

It’s possible that your parents have this same concern, which is part of the reason they think you should leave it at home. If you want to bring it, sure, bring it, but it’s certainly not a necessity. If it doesn’t fit, leave it at home. Keep in mind that it’ll also take up a good amount of desk space, so be aware of how big your desk is. If you live close enough that you’re driving to college, you could always bring it to your school later, if you find that you really want it.

As some others have pointed out, it’s worthwhile to keep in mind that you may not use your computer as much as you think you will. Once you start getting settled into your classes, club activities, and start making friends, you’ll likely find that a lot of your time is being used up. The computer could just become a really big paper weight that never gets used, but takes up two thirds of your desk space.

if you’re a comp sci major having extra workspace from your desktop monitor will probably prove to be useful

I HATE using a laptop#$%/&×!!! Bring your desktop.

Any chance that they are concerned because it is optimized for gaming, and they are worried about your time management of such? That said, you are going to college, not a hotel, so you should take anything you will need over 9 months. Extra shoes, jacket, computer all make sense.

You’re mad at your parents for saying that you shouldn’t take your computer to college, but you’re asking and accepting opinions from people that you don’t know online?

Having a computer in addition to a laptop seems excessive. Plus it’s more hassle to carry more things with you. Take what you need. I understand that you’re proud of this computer, because you’ve built it yourself, but you need to take other things into account.

Are you a STEM or CS major? I’m a technical consultant, and 2 computers doesn’t seem excessive to me. I have a laptop and a desktop tower with 2 large screens (still not enough), plus various tablet/phone things. My son (sophomore in HS) also has a laptop and a desktop. The laptop goes back and forth to school, and the school may also want him to have a iPad this year (that seems excessive). My husband has a desktop at work and a laptop that goes back and forth. To me, 2 computers seems like a reasonable number, especially if the laptop will be taken to classes. Personally, I’m not a big laptop fan, and type much faster on a regular desktop keyboard.

Anyone saying two computers is excessive probably doesn’t use one nearly as someone who owns two to begin with. Chances are if you own two computers in the first place, you use both. Find a way to take your second computer, it’s very normal and space is minimal compared to the payoff.

It’s like two monitors. A single screen setup annoys me now that I went to dual monitors a few years ago.

Be calm about it. Explain that its a part of your life and daily living, and it is your decision as it is your property. People tend to think technology and daily life integration is an inherent negative, wrongly so. Tech is a tool like any other: it is all about how it is used. If it makes your life that much better, I am sure your parents will listen if you stay calm, respectful, and reasonable.

I work in IT and my kid is a CS major. And I still think 2 is not necessary, at least to start with.

Check out this list if you want potentially excessive for a STEM student:

I have 2 computers at home, but I’m only bringing my laptop. My friends w/ gaming PC’s they built themselves are all leaving theirs at home as well. There’s just not enough room for it. It’s sad to leave a desktop at home, so make sure you get a powerhouse laptop.

Two computers isn’t excessive, it’s just impractical.

I brought my two laptop to school my first year. Was it “excessive”? No. I wanted it. I brought it. Would I suggest it to someone who has poor time management skills? No. It will detract away from your studies.

Bring your computer once you have an understanding of how your schedule is and what actual free time you have.

As for the number of computers one has, I don’t care how many computers one has or uses. I have two laptops. I am going to be getting a desktop this Fall. I am not bringing it to college. I have no space for it nor do I desire to make some for it. My hobbies will just have to hold for the breaks.
