Do you consider 10 colleges to be a lot to apply to?

My college list right now has 10 entries: 2 safeties, 2 matches, 2 high-matches/low-reaches, and 4 reaches. They vary fairly widely in terms of size, location, atmosphere, etc. Do you consider this to be a long list? On CC it seems pretty typical (maybe on the higher side), but my friends all seem surprised that I'm considering that many schools; most of them are only thinking about two or three, and one of them has six or seven.

I think 10 may be a bit above average, but its not excessively high (well, at least not too excessively high). Anyway, I know people who apply to more than twice the amount you do, so its not surprising.

If you apply to the UCs, I consider it’s one application. Mine has 4-5 reaches, 4-5 matches, 4-5 safeties. The reasons there are so many safeties, she is a bit picky when it comes to location.

On CC, 10 would probably be considered low. Haha.

The amount of colleges a student applies to varies wildly, depending on the high school. High schools with many top students will see more applications being sent out, because admission to top schools is very random. Conversely, when a high school’s average student only aims for state flagships or lower-ranked privates, people tend to apply to fewer colleges because admissions becomes more predictable.

I personally think 10 is the maximum anyone should apply to (though it’s certainly not too many), and your spread of schools seems reasonable.
