Judge people's intelligence by their spelling? I know it's bad, but sometimes I just can't help it. I'm not talking about simple typos, or obvious lack of proficiency in the language (i.e. the writing of someone who isn't fluent in the language), but words that have obvious errors in them. E.g. "it's" where "its" would be correct, or "definately" instead of "definitely," where such mistakes appear consistently.

Only if it's something so obnoxious as typing "hey" as "heii" or this:

tHiz tYpiiNg sUks s000 bAdz.

Augh. Disgusting.

If English isn't his or her first language, then of course its best to just let it go because it's not so easy learning a new language, but...

if you've lived in the US your entire life, are above the age of 16 (10th grade), and still uses the phrase "their here," you bet I'm gonna judge your intelligence.

Also I agree with the person above me, capitalizing random letters and thinking your special way of typing is cool really, really... isn't.

Good :) So I'm not alone.

If the mistakes are consistent and plentiful then I may start to wonder. But other than that, I really only judge when people purposely misspell to look "kewl."

On academia papers of course. Online? Just stupid and a waste of your temper.

I mean, I understand a few mistakes here and there because it happens, but when it keeps happening consistently? Hmm, makes me wonder..

Oh, and this isn't exactly a spelling issue(more of incorrect grammar, I guess) but a pet peeve of mines is when people use their, there or they're incorrectly. Like "I have THERE book".

"On academia papers of course. Online? Just stupid and a waste of your temper"

Well, it's not like I get angry at them. I just use it to judge whether or not to take that person seriously, depending on what he/she is saying.

my current pet peeve is how many people spell ridiculous "rediculous"

I believe we all do it on a subconscious level. For example, you're talking on AIM and your friend says "LYKE omg LYKE i jus got brad pitts boxas!" You would think she is being an immature dimwit. My brother used "ok" instead of "okay" on one of his English papers...definitely not the smartest thing to do.

I try to be forgiving of syntax errors when I see them online. I have a good friend who's dyslexic, and I try to keep in mind that whoever typed the message could be, too- you never know, and it wouldn't be fair to judge them on that alone.

However, I will gladly ignore anything said by a person who abuses netspeak. It drives me up a wall. >:|

Well, I am not an American, but I think I can spell pretty well... And it is very surprising to me when people who were actually born in this country can't spell. I think that it's just sad..

Spelling is not a big deal. At all.

A neglect of good grammar, however, is grounds for the death penalty.

ya i totaly agree wit u, i haet it wen ppl use bad grammer and speling. it reely ****es me off. its one of the things i hate most about teh internet, and im glad to see other liek-minded poeple here on this web sight.

The exact opposite of all of your experiences happened when some of my former middle school classmates made fun of me for typing out whole sentences online w/ proper spelling, capitalization, etc. They weren't exactly nice people.

I don't always type like that, though. It's ok to get lax on those things sometimes w/ the web.

I do get annoyed when people spell things wrong, but I do it too.

People make fun of me because my texting is like whole sentences with no "2" instead of to/too and all of that crap. I even used to capitalize "I", but now my blackberry does it automatically and I look like a super nerd with my spell checked, capitalized, puncuated, proper contractions filled messages.

I always use basic grammar on message boards. I don't get caught up in all the business about misplaced modifiers and split infinitives, but I make sure that I show that I can write a paragraph. Usually in live chat, I don't capitalize, and I use minimal punctuation, but I always spell things correctly, and I separate my thoughts with punctuations for clarity. Plenty of people have asked why I use such good spelling/grammar on the Internet, but it's really just a habit. I have seen plenty of people use perfect grammar in live chat, but I don't, because I can save time if I skimp a little.
