Do you feel ashamed that you go to a Community College?

I got in some good colleges from UCs but I decided to go to community college because of financial restraints...but even then sometimes I feel ashamed that I am going to a community college. Especially when I hear my friends talking about how great their school is (UCI, UCSD etc.) I can't wait to transfer.

Take it from this transfer veteran: there's no shame in saving thousands of dollars.

I did at first, but honestly I've since gotten over it. It does not matter where you start, it matters where you finsh.

I think it is ok to go to a CC after high school as long as you dont stay there for FIVE YEARS! :)
I agree with UCLAri, there is nothing wrong with saving some couple thousands of dollars.

The fact of the matter is that if you are working as hard as your counterpart at UC(place your city here), then it's nothing to feel shame over. Yes, there is more pride in saying, "I go to UC(place your city here)" than "I go to (place your city here) City College.

Then again, in the end, when you have half the loans as your four-year UC counterparts, and can afford that shiny new car, any and all issues with your two years at a JC will melt away.

That, and who cares what other people think at this stage of the game? Who are you trying to impress other than UC(place your city here)'s admissions and yourself?

people at community colleges are great too. seems like most of the people i've met while attending them are mature and laid back, yet very serious about their education. i'm glad i went the cc route. (not that i had much choice)

What did we loose and what did we gain? Think about it...You will soon realize that the gain outweighs the loss.
(what people think of you + social life etc Vs. $$$$ + Less distractions + smaller class sizes etc)

So glad i chose the CC transfer path...

i will proudly wear my CC shirt in wherever i got into, even stanford. (imagine me wearing CC shirt in stanford, and tells "do you know that transfer admission rate is less than freshman admission rate? i own you all." or something)

Blackdream, hell ya dude...do u know how much DeAnza shirt costs?

Yes!!! I am ashamed!!! But in the end, when my time is up, I'll have a degree just like everyone else, and that's all that matters.

CC is cool! Just keep your grades high! I mean at least 3.5! Take your time, even five years, but do it right! Then you can tranfer to ANY school you want! At the end it won't make a difference. I am one of those people that had to go take the long CC road, but now I am in a possition to take advantage of it. Im me if you got more questions.

Blackdream, haha, now this is something I'd like to see!

man, if i really got into stanford, my roomates gonna be amazed by my old school style. (as old school FOB free-style rap described)

my famous quotes

at UC davis dinning common: "Wow, so much food!"
at UC davis coed: "Wow, they actually got HOT water!?"
at school: "Man, it doesn't matter which school i got into, as long as
1. I don't have to wake up at wee hour in the morning, drive an hour thru traffic, then stay late until 10pm.
2. there are hot water on campus
3. there are food.
then i am satisfied.

Seeing how many people I talk to about college are more than aware of the fact that my path is significantly cheaper, I wouldn't care if they didn't like CC's.

Over the past year, I've spent about 350 in books, and that is really about all! Good ol' FAFSA.

I also have the chance to get scholarships to go to the University of Minnesota :) Will probably have a 3.8+ GPA with plenty of EC's.

One important skill i picked up at my community college is self study. the professor at my community college aren't all that great, so i have to study on my own. this skill will go with me on to the UC and will help me tremendously...i'm glad i went to a community college...=)...i will definitely buy a t-shirt of my college before i leave and wear it around the UC..just like blackdream

I laugh when people try to start the "oh, you dont go to a real school?" thing (literally a direct quote, btw). K, so most of my professors are either currently or formerly employed by local universities (chapman, usc, uci) and theyre teaching the same subjects/classes they do there. Im getting the same lecture for english 1b honors as the kid at chapman, but im paying way less and only have 18 people in my class. And Im not smart for choosing this, how?

Its all so silly. The whole prestige thing is ridiculous. Id rather invest in a quality graduate program or put a down payment on a house after graduation instead of paying 5x the CCC amount for boring, basic general ed classes. Ive generally had a really great experience at community college and it's totally made me appreciate what I have.

So no, Ive never felt ashamed of being a CCC student. Anger, maybe, when people make unqualified generalizations about CCC kids, but never shame. Ive worked hard in community college and Ive gained a lot and I feel like Im going into my upper division work completely prepared for whatever's coming my way. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

CCCT- Am sorry to hear that you've been unsatisfied with your professors at your CC. My good ones far outweigh the bad ones (can only think of maybe 2 bad ones out of like 25). Ive found that CCC professors, at least the ones Ive been fortunate enough to have, are generally pretty dedicated to their work and they really believe in the transfer system. They're there to help us succeed and move on, as opposed to some university professor who's (barely) teaching just to do research. All of my teachers were passionate about their areas of expertise and felt like they had something to offer us. Ive gained a lot just from my personal interactions with these people.

Most of the professors I have had have worked as teachers at universities. My English professor last year tought at UCLA for several years, she left for the CC when she had the chance to become department head.

you generally have great professors on liberal arts subject (i have an english professor who taught in UCB and it's a 12 persons class here, nuff said.)

although science professors SUCK in CCC.

YES!!!! Very much so.

I was braging about my accomplishments in HS. Tons of AP, high test scores.

ENd up in CC w/ most underachievers b/c of monetory probs.
