Hi! I am a rising HS senior, and really want to apply to Hopkins for academic reasons. However, I've heard all the horror stories there are to hear.

Is the campus/area around campus safe? Is it really a major concern?

Long story short:

Right around campus (i.e. a few blocks in any direction) = safe
North of campus = quite safe, actually a very wealthy and scenic neighborhood
East of campus = Not a great area, can be somewhat unsafe if you go too far
South of campus = gets sketchy fairly quickly. I wouldn’t walk for than 5 blocks south.
West of campus = fairly safe and middle class, I don’t know too much about this area though.

The medical school is in a very different part of the city and it is not that safe, though they are taking massive steps to make it nicer:

Overall, Baltimore is not that safe of a city, but homewood is in one of the safer parts.

There is already a discussion on this topic on the first page of discussion threads:

Ignore the immaturity of one of the posters on that thread but aside from that I think there is a lot of helpful opinions.

Hopkins is extremely safe, and safety conscious. It is in a beautiful area of Baltimore. The campus security is amazing, with guard booths at every dorm. Hopkins really cares about the safety of its students. Trust me…I spent 4 years there. Hopkins is often rated #1 in college safety. No worries.
