Do you find yourself judging colleges' cultures by the kids you know who go there?

Tons of kids from my school go to Trinity College in CT, and they're all filthy rich, stuck-up, fake, and superficial. Same goes for GWU, College of Charleston, and U of Miami.
The kids from my school who went to Georgetown are kinda stuck-up and VERY fake.
The kids from my school who went to the University of Vermont are all wealthy. Some of them stuck-up, some nice. Same goes for all the LACs.
Harvard, based on who has gone there from my school, is truly diverse. The kids we've sent have diverse personalities, backgrounds, interests, etc.

Based on this I have strong judgments of Trinity, College of Charleston, and U of Miami in particular as playgrounds for prep school kids. Have you guys formed certain judgments of schools based on who you know that goes there?

I don’t think you should make these type of judgements!
Most colleges & universities recruit a diverse student body!
Obviously Brigham Young U. is all Mormon. (there are exceptions)

You must visit, you must ask questions, you must talk to students (outside of your tour guide or admissions people). Overnight stays usually make it or break it for applicants if they are sitting on the fence! :)

no kidding. jealous much? Judgments belong in a courtroom, and are not generally the most satisfying aspect of a judge’s work.

You really should try to figure out what kind of values you’ve inherited from your parents (they ALWAYS filter down), and whether they are likely to work for you in this new world order of tolerance and respect.

I bet if you really reflect on your statement that “all” of the students you know who go to a certain school are a certain type, you will start to remember the exceptions or variety within your data set.
If you walk around any of the schools on your list, you will find students who do not fit these generalizations.
That said, I do think there are campus cultures that appeal more to some people than others, and you sound like you are ready to do some more exploration to find schools that are right for you.

I wish I could edit my post because of course I do not believe that ALL students at a certain school are a certain type. There are exceptions or variety EVERYWHERE. However, at some of the schools (Trinity, C of C, Miami) I know SO many people and review sites have attested to the beliefs I’ve cultivated about their respective student bodies (or at least a sizable portion of them).
