What was the outcome of this, if you don't mind me asking?

From the student perspective: I've had about 10 different 4-year plans for college since the time I applied. First it was Physiology (for med school), then Business Administration, then Accounting (what was I thinking?!), then International Business, Economics, and then International Relations. That list excludes my one-day fantasies of Psychology and Biology. My BA in IR may not be the most practical thing in the world (though my brother, who's a Journalism major, is unsure of whose degree will be worth less), but I like it, and so I'll do better in it than in something I hate.

I originally had plans of double-majoring in IR and either Economics or Business Administration, but I've decided that instead of spending my days studying "practical" that I really don't like, I'm going to learn languages. Since this is really the best time to learn a language (other than the whole "childhood" thing, which a ship that sailed a long time ago), I'm going to add German and Russian to my repertoire. (I might take Hebrew classes as well; my Jewish History class is fascinating. My decision is pending.) A BA in a liberal arts subject like IR may not mean much, but the practical applications of knowing four languages (English, French, German, and Russian specifically) are enormous. Plus, even with learning two languages, I can finish my major in four years, with a semester abroad, and while taking only four classes every semester (and no summer classes). Better, in my opinion, than my roommate, who has decided that he will double major in Biochem and Math, for which he "only has to take 5 courses every semester."

So, the way I see it, a double major isn't worth it unless they're in two very different disciplines and you want to have options. If you just want to have some basic financial knowledge, take a class on finance--you don't need a whole major in Economics to know the basics.

just realised this is an old thread and you are not asking for more advice ;)
