My school (while being very ghetto), has a very high AP Chem average score, 4.8 nearly every year. While looking through this site, it seems like everyone is talking about writing Chemistry essays on the last 2 of the chemistry FRQs. Why would you waste your time on essays if you can just directly answer the question and still get full points with less time? Or am I misunderstanding the term "essay" as in short response.

Essay → short response. The readers don’t want a very long response to each question. A short paragraph of 2-3 sentences should suffice. Just make sure you write down everything that you can think of that pertains to the question, you want to give yourself the best chance of getting all the points for the question

Essay is an umbrella term for FRQ/free response. So yeah it’s MC Portion and “Essay” portion, aka just calculations and answers, and maybe 1 sentence explanations. Not a traditional essay by any means
