Do you guys think I should drop the class?

Today I had my first day of a chemistry class and I can already tell that professor is extremely boring.

He drones on and on.

He goes off tangents for even the simplest things. So I question if I will be able to retain any information from him when we actually get to some difficult material.

I can’t even focus because his voice is so boring.

However this class is needed so I can take Organic Chemistry in the fall.

Is o chem only offered in the fall? I would suggest putting off the chemistry course if you already have a bad feeling about it. If you really must take the class now, then you probably just have to solider on. If for whatever you reason, you do wind up doing poorly on your first exam/midterm/etc. and you can still drop, the W might be the smarter move if you know you won’t earn a decent grade. I took a math course awhile and the professor was terrible. He also didn’t do much lecturing. When our first exam came around and I only scored a 60%, I knew that I had to drop. I wish you luck with your situation. Maybe your professor isn’t as bad as you think and he will get serious when those difficult topics come up.

If you need to take orgo in the fall you may just have to supplement your learning with other resources. Like the textbook or the internet.

Not delaying graduation may be more important than being interested in your professor’s style.

@zettasyntax nope it is not offered in the fall at my current CC. I planned to take gen chem II ( the class I am considering dropping) in spring 2017. and then take organic chem at a local university with a better professor.
I have had bad professors in other subjects ,but they were subjects that I had strong background in. So it didn’t worry me too much that professor was bad.

I am concern with the professor teaching this time because chemistry is in a way a new subject to me and I want actually learn the material not just memorize.

@bodangles Not necessarily needed. I am an engineering major who also taking premed prerequisites

Perhaps you can come to the next class prepared with some good questions from the readings and liven up the lecture with some class interaction.
