At my school the smartest kid definitely isn’t always the valedictorian. Apparently the valedictorian for the graduating class this year has been cheating his way to the top…

I definitely don’t have a shot at valedictorian mainly because of my freshman year grades… If the didn’t count though, I still don’t think I’d be valedictorian… Maybe salutatorian though… Too bad. :p

For my graduating class, the val. so far somewhat deserves it; I think he deserves sal. though. There’s this other kid who deserves it more; he’s absolutely brilliant… But I’m pretty sure he’ll replace him by the end of this year.

@avatarmage It’s over a small difference between decimal points. Basically, between a 4.32 and a 4.33, they don’t want to count the 4.33 as higher than the 4.32 because that would be ridiculous. But I do wish that we had regular ranking so that I could actually know what I am…

The senior class at my school elects the valedictorian. The val this year gave an AWESOME speech. She is very intelligent and well-spoken. We have a lot of over-achievers so it would just be pointless to award one of them the title.

First of all, being a Valedictorian at my school means next to nothing. It is literally being 1a in a sea of 1b’s and 1c’s.

That being said, no, the smartest kid isn’t always the valedictorian, but my school had the smartest kid as the valedictorian 2 years ago. He simply went into the IB program, worked hard, and got straight As without trying to AP gorge taking virtual courses or taking joke classes. Oh, and he is my brother.

Depends on what a cheater is. If someone is blantantly copying answers off each other, then no. Those are the insecure bastards that are struggling to staying in the IB program. If its the “peeker” (i.e. peeks if he/she is stuck on an answer) then there are plenty sadly. Me, I jut do my work. I don’t like being dependent on others when I can control the situation.

6.0 GPA Joke Classes Include:
AP Psychology
IB HL Psychology
IB SL Psychology (see where this is going?)
IB ITGS (Just rename it 6.0 GPA study hall)
AP Environmental Science? (no one had a high A in the class, highest was a 94)

I say I have a fair shot. I have all As, and I took a couple of AP electives/honors electives. Everyone who is trying to take as many APs as possible usually get at least a couple Bs. Every other potential valedictorian took a path similar to mine. and class rank is based on unweighted GPA first and weighted 2nd. I say I have a fair shot, assuming final grades are the only ones that count (which it should).

Edit: “Cumulative Grade Point Averages are based on final grades only.” That what we mean as in GPA here, right? If so, .

There are two students at my school who take nothing but academic classes. Thus, they have room to take a bunch of weighted academic electives, like:

Spanish V
AP Spanish
Latin V
AP Latin
AP European History
AP Chemistry
AP Physics C

One of them has literally taken every course I just listed, in addition to the standard AP fare. Meanwhile, blockheads like me who have taken orchestra/band/chorus every semester are left behind.

1) Usually one of the best students gets Valedictorian. Although, I think the premise of proclaiming the #1 ranked student to be the “smartest” is mildly skewed. That is if you agree with Garner’s Multiple Intelligences theory (woop AP Psych reference!).

There are some easy GPA boosters but you would run out of them if you tried to take all advanced for three years.

I don’t have a fair shot, because my school is a complete free-for-all when it comes to grade grubbing. The top people usually take AP classes for credit at a nearby ivy-esque university over the summer, costing their parents $800+ per class. They then use extra spaces in their schedule to take even more AP classes. To be in the top ten group, a 4.7/5.0 gpa is the minimum, and that’s cutting it close.

The Val only has to take 3 APs. It’s ridiculous. Two years ago, the Val took 3 APs and got into local college with sub 2000 SAT; number 3 took 10 APs and got into Yale with a 2350 SAT. Class rank,IMO, is absolutely meaningless.
