Corrupt high school administration

Just wondering, does anyone else's high school have a system of picking valedictorians/salutatorians by choosing/voting someone out of the top 10-15 (class rank). So you could be rank 1 and not be either, while someone who is rank 13 could be valedictorian? Because that's how my school does it, so it's really subjective/corrupt, and not fair at all.

That’s… I’ve never heard of that. That sounds REALLY unfair though, ***.

That’s terrible! Valedictorian/salutatorian is supposed to be measured objectively, by GPA.

O.O;. I’ve never heard of that at all. And yea, that would be super subjective and corrupt. Who votes, that whole class?

That totally sucks, sorry man. I’m not sure how my school calculates it, but what you describes doesn’t sound kosher.

tom jones is most definatly the man

and no ive never heard of a system like that

that is terribly messed up

Lol, my school does that too. Except it’s only the top 5 students. So the entire Senior class votes for one of the top 5 students to be val. It’s really more of a popularity contest than anything else.

That doesn’t sound corrupt. Just sucks if the others don’t think you deserve it. Assuming you want to be valedictorian.

In the long run, it probably doesn’t matter much. A class rank of 1 is a class rank of 1 is a class rank of 1.

The administration here chooses the valedictorian. For the past three years I’ve been here, it hasn’t been the person with the highest GPA; it has been the person who they deem to have the most school spirit. It’s called The Tool of the Year award here.

Last year during graduation, the kid that had the highest GPA gave the “valedictorian” a wrench. It was hilarious.

I’m sure his parents were especially thrilled.

My school’s way of picking valedictorian/salutatorian is a joke. They just take the 10 or so highest-ranked kids and deem them “Valedictorian,” then the next 10 highest-ranked “Salutatorians.”

Of course it also depends on other factors such as the number of semesters of honors/AP classes you’ve taken, but I think that having so many of them kind of takes away from the whole thing.

Well, I was there because my brother graduated last year. I sat in the back of the auditorium so I figure the kid with the highest GPA was giving the valedictorian some sort of an award or trophy. None of the parents got the joke since the only people laughing were the graduates. I only got the joke after I saw a close up video of the graduation ceremony.

Lol my school has no vals/sals. Just don’t rank at all, that way nobody feels bad I suppose.

The administration here chooses the valedictorian. For the past three years I’ve been here, it hasn’t been the person with the highest GPA; it has been the person who they deem to have the most school spirit. It’s called The Tool of the Year award here.

Haha, that’s pretty nice, but demeaning in a way lol. Still would be hilarious :D

That’s a dumb system, because a large population of the teachers at my school are tools. (OMG, I UNDERSTAND THE WRENCH-GIVING ANECDOTE NOW.)

We just go by weighted GPA. The only thing that bugs me is that there are some grade-grubbers who take honors instead of AP to get easy As. Oh well, they’ll lose out eventually when honors is no longer offered.

^^That is really funny :)

Yea, last year our val was some caucasian girl who was rank 13 or so, while the Rank 1 guy was asian (he was the salutatorian).

2 years ago, our val was a caucasian guy who was rank 10, while the rank 1 guy was asian (and went to Columbia)

3 years ago, our val was some caucasian girl who went to some random college, while our rank 1 guy was asian (and went to Yale)

And this year? I’m rank 1 and asian. You can see the trend…

I wonder how the valedictorian explained it to his parents.

^^Maybe you should try to make more friends?

No vals or sals here, but we do rank. People who make speeches at graduation try out for it.

Sucks for you though, tjitm.
