I know being valedictorian is a big deal for a lot of us, so how hard are you guys and the others trying for the title?

I know my classmates are very intent on being valedictorian, and the school is aware of the large tiger mom population (lots of Asians due to the magnet program), so it's a good thing that anyone who has the maximum weighted GPA, which is relatively noncompetitive with so many AP's offered, is named one. If the school adopted the single-val. practice, however, there would be blood.

That's not exactly why I'm paralyzed with fear. A single B automatically prevents a student from getting the max 4.8 GPA. All the current val. candidates have the same calculus teacher, who (bless him) doesn't practice grade inflation and genuinely challenges his students, and are all getting not-A's. Except for me. I managed to pull a solid A for my final grade. Oh, whatever-deity-may-take-mercy-on-me.

I really didn’t try in high school, but when the first class rankings were released at the end of 10th grade, WOW! People were very edgy about it, and I was surprised to see I was first. And I graduated as the sole Val, as well.

If you’re concerned about how students may act, don’t share your grades. Don’t brag, be modest. Honestly, however you feel now, it won’t mean much whether you were Val or Sal or nothing in a few years. I’m 24 now and I don’t ever talk about it or really even care much. It’s all about kicking butt in college at that point.

I work hard but I’m not like freaking out or anything…I’m third now (on the brink of making sal) but I would have to make all A+'s in about 16 more AP classes to supersede number #1. I’m content, though I did my best. Plus, the guy at my school is just a one-of-a-kind genius (he was taking Calc BC in eighth grade), so everyone at my school just kind of accepts that.

I am a freshman at a non-competitive school. It’s kinda weird; like 20 kids are taking 4 duel enrollment courses their freshman year (including me), but I am probably the only one who’s doing it with a plan to get into an Ivy or something. Most of the kids are just taking them to get free college credits transferable to our State U’s. It’s pretty funny.

So far this year, I have one B. I am sure that will be my last.
I’ll probably still be able to be valedictorian even if some students get straight A’s; I’ll probably still have a higher weighted GPA because I am taking like 6 honors/duel enrollment classes out of 8, and I plan on doing this every year.
My classmates are smart, but they don’t have the cutthroat competition mindset offered at other schools.

I wish I was more competitive freshman and sophomore years. I was 7th and then I took a nonweighted art class junior year (even with AP Physics, AP Chem, AP Comp Sci, and AP Language) and now I’m 15th.

Our valedictorian last year went to Dartmouth, salutatorian went to princeton. The valedictorian had a 4.7 (I think). I don’t know how she did it…

at my school they don’t use weighted gpa’s which makes no sense to me. the top two seniors this year are very close. one of them is all AP and/or advanced classes while the other is in all regular classes. they both have the same grades but it seems to me like the girl in harder classes should be val because she’s had to work harder for it.

My school doesn’t have one. If it did, I’m pretty sure I would be it but there are maybe 2-3 other people pretty high up there too, but they don’t have all advanced classes.

At my school, people are really serious about grades. However, no one really cares about ranking/being valedictorian. Most people care a lot about their own grades but don’t know anyone else’s grades.

Not.
There are about 3 kids who constantly make 98s in all their classes, and the rest of us accepted back in middle school that one of them is gonna be val.
However, the cockiest one’s average is going down, so… O;

My school doesn’t rank or give our position by percentage. I really support the practice- I’m sick of everyone in my classes comparing grades on their test/essay/whatever the second they get handed back, so I can only imagine what kind of stress would be involved with ranks.

Well, as far as I know, I am either 2nd or 3rd. The guy who is first is like grade-wide accepted genius. He also acts like a 5-year-old (LOL if you first met him, you would not ever believe that he was the smartest kid :D) and is one of my best friends. The girl who is either 2nd or 3rd (either above or below me) is also one of my best friends :). Yeah…the “smart” community is pretty tight in our grade. And we’re really not competitive about our grades (except for the #1 guy occasionally) which is always refreshing.

The “estimated” valedictorian of my grade is this little asian (duh) girl who acts like a 10 year old. I sit next to her in APUSH and AP Calc AB and she just draws little cartoons. I swear yesterday in calc when we were going over the chain rule she asked me whether she should draw a yoshi or mario, I told her yoshi. Yet I’ve never seen her get below a 95 in either of those classes, I think she has like a 4.6-4.8 weighted, 3.95-4 uw. Geniuses… how do they work.
