Is it absolutely mandatory to take your first writing requirement in your first year? It would be really convenient if that was not the case, but I was just wondering.

oh okay thanks! Could I take it during the summer term?

I don’t think it is offered then.

^Hazel is wrong.

In my ENWR class last year, I had 3 third years and 3 second years in my class.

Hazel is not wrong…she didn’t opine on the question. She simply posted a quote from the English department website.

The rule is very clear. There are always exceptions.

PS Even if this wasn’t the rule, it is a good idea to take this class early as it will serve you well throughout your college career.

Yeah I am taking an ENWR class next semester (I’m #2 on the waitlist so I’ll probably get it and if not I can talk to my professor). And I bet some of those second and third years are transfer students.

+1

Ahh now you have figured out my strategy of never being wrong!

You really don’t have to take it your first year, my ENWR TA even said so… and only 1 of the 6 students were transfers.

I don’t think an ENWR TA, most of whom are only at UVA for 1 or 2 years, is a more reliable source than printed regulations. Who knows how your priority registration could be affected if you do not have it completed in your first year. Many students value following rules at UVA, and I don’t think advocating for a student to break a rule is in the spirit of the UVA community.

Lol, chillout Hazel, not everyone has the time or interest to take ENWR their first year. Some people can’t even get into ENWR their first year or they have to settle for an ENWR they aren’t interested in. I don’t blame people for opting to wait to take it later than force themselves to fill the requirement.

You realize that every 2nd year in one of those classes is taking up a 1st year’s space, contributing to the problem you claim is the source? This is the most terrible advice I’ve ever read on here.

You do realize that if a first year waits to take it their second year, they don’t take a spot that year… you figure out the rest.

Or no, just follow Hazels advice and take an ENWR you aren’t interested in or an ENWR at a bad time, which could lead you to get a worse grade than if you had an ENWR you were interested in at a convenient time for you.

Plue00…this is an open forum and you are certainly entitled to your opinion. To those of you who are reading Plue’s advice vs. Hazel’s advice, please remember that Hazel has actually experienced all four years of college and graduated PBK. She knows of what she speaks. You would be wise to listen.
