SEAS -- First year writing and AP credits question

Do SEAS students have a first year writing requirement? What about a foreign language requirement?

I pulled up the Mechanical Engineering curriculum and I don’t see any reference to a first year writing or a foreign language requirement. It shows three HSS electives, one science elective, one math-science elective, four math/science/technical electives and three unrestricted electives.

Am I missing something? I have been all over the UVA website trying to figure this out and honestly, I’m confused.

My son has to sign up and pay for his AP exams by this Friday and we’re trying to figure out if there are any AP exams that wouldn’t make sense to take.

He scored a 4 on the AP Language exam last year. I’ve looked at the AP credits page and it says a 4 on AP Lang will give him 3 credits for ENWR 1000T but I can’t find ENWR 1000T anywhere in the course catalog.

Thanks!

Anyone?

I’m pretty sure that no matter what degree you’re going into, you must take first year writing, and maybe a foreign language. Although it would definitely help to take the AP English and foreign language exams, it will be practically useless if he doesn’t get a 5 because UVA primarily accepts 5’s. If he doesn’t get a 5 on an exam, you’ll have to take the course at UVA. I could be wrong, but this is what I’ve heard.

@infinigirly Thanks for the reply.

I thought for sure he would have to take first year writing and a foreign language because I saw on the College of Arts & Sciences that all students are required to take those. But there is nothing mentioned for the engineering students.

I don’t see where First Year Writing would fit into their schedule. The STS 1500 class sounds like it covers some writing so maybe that’s all the SEAS students have to take.

@“Dean J” do you know the answer to this question?

I had hoped a current student would answer, but my daughter is a fairly recent engineering grad. Their curriculum is almost completely different than the College. You have the correct information from the pdf you linked - that’s what your son will need to take. My daughter studied a foreign language because she had an interest, but it was not required. No first year writing requirement, just the STS courses.

@sabaray Thank you!
