Do you join clubs for college or interest?

I always join clubs out of interest or sometimes a feeling of obligation since my school is so small and un-involved many clubs and teams “need” me and I join them so my friends can keep their interests alive, or improve their chances in a favorite sport etc. College is sometimes a motivating factor to get MORE involved in things I have already joined, but it is always the after thought.

I also never have the trouble of being in a club where most of the others joined for college since I am the only person at my school in probably five years to apply fr any colleges where they needed good EC’s. Most just go to the state schools, or pay 30k a ear for small private Unis that are not any better then state schools.

Ugghh I hate when people just join clubs for resume. I do it out of interest. I genuinely enjoy doing HOSA, Key Club, and Debate. I tried doing a science club, but I could never find the time to actually go, and it didn’t seem to be one of my priorities although it was really interesting. Maybe next year I could have time, but its also possible that I’m not that interested in the club. What do you guys think?

Also, what about people whop join clubs just to get officer positions to look good on their resume? Not only is joining a lot of clubs bad, but also the fact that you don’t put a lot of time into it and just want a position to look like you’re involved, but really aren’t.

Most of the time I join clubs that interest me and will look good to a college. I don’t sign up for things merely because they will look good for college, I have to enjoy them too, I don’t want a college to think that I’m really into something I’m not.

It’s 50/50 for me. But clubs I create are purely by interest. That’s why I wanna create a Japanese club :D

I hate every club in my school and im terrible at sports, so I joined one club just for college. Everyone just joins clubs if their clique is involved let’s be honest

I do theater, Key Cub and Youth in Government for fun, I do Academic Bowl so that the teachers that I need for letters of recommendation will get to know me personally outsid of class. I originally joined theater to hang out with beautiful girls-which has worked well so far.

everything that i am in I am interested in, but knowing that it will help me with college is an extra motivation to really push myself. But I join and participate out of interest…

I only join clubs that focus on topics in which I’m interested. I despise people who do clubs and get officer positions solely to increase the length of their college resume. And people who don’t deserve to be in certain clubs disgust me. Our school has this group that goes down to the middle school to promote an anti-drug lifestyle, and guess who gets in (they’re selected by the faculty sponsors)? Yep, the druggies. I also didn’t bother with NHS because 75% of the people who were accepted (mostly the people who get drunk at all the parties) are there not because they care about community service, but because they think it’s prestigious (lol!). Forget NHS and the hypocrites, I can serve my community myself, and I do.

I joined two clubs out of interest. I joined another one for college. I hate myself for it. It makes me feel kind of fake, actually, like I’m forcing myself to be some kind of ideal for college admissions officers or something.

The activities that I am involved with out of school are for interest (and luckily look really good). But things like Peer Leadership and Global Voice are for college and socializing. Even though I know in-school clubs are not going to help much. I also have no interest in being involved with NHS, I know that its bull**** and will not be joining next (junior) year.

I joined a few for college but I ended up liking them so its a 2for1 thing with me. :)

In our school they added National Spanish Honor Society and I can tell that at least 40% of everyone in there joined just because of the college resume.

I run XC/track because I love running and I want to continue competitive running in college.

Well this is how my process goes.

We have club fair…I sign up for almost everything so I can get the candy. Then once club the club has a meeting, I might go might not. But I just sign up just to be nice. I’m only REALLY apart of 3 clubs. Multicultural, Art CLub, and MUN

I join out of personal interest only. Joining something just to look good for college seems rather lame to me.

I join clubs out of interest, like literary magazine or stem savvy, but the people who really want to get leadership positions in NHS and Key Club seem to have the college perspective in mind.

This year, I wasn’t involved at school at all because I wasn’t really aware of what was going on.
Next year, I’ll be in theatre because of interest, same with Art and Writing club.
I want to join Key Club, because I’ve heard it is fun, plus I want to be more involved with the school. Even if it is just helping promote school events, or volunteering.

So, interest. They’re all things I want to be involved in. At the same time, clubs look nice. It’s just kind of a benefit.

Both.
I’ll admit, if I didn’t have to worry about getting into college I wouldn’t be involved in any activities/clubs. Because I’m really lazy and just don’t feel like staying after school all day and having those responsibilities when I just want to go home and relax.
However, I only choose clubs I’m interested in and I actually like them now. I like the people.

Both I guess

Last year (freshman year) I joined debate because I thought it seemed awesome and I gave football a try

I’m glad I joined debate because it is a lot of fun and I didn’t even know that it looked so good on college applications so that’s a plus

Football I decided I should try it out I have a HUGE frame so I thought hey might as well. I liked it but I can’t stand my teammates and between my schedule next year and debate I don’t have time.

Next year I want to join S.E.A.C. (student environmental action coalition) because I’ve been getting more into the environment.
I also want to join S.A.D.D./I.D.F.Y. (students against destructive decisions/Idaho drug free youth) that club does ribbon week and this fake car crash thing which seems fun to do and I feel passionately about what they are trying to teach.

I also wanna join Jr. Civitan & Key Club because they do a lot of volunteer work and I love volunteering so yeah. I’m gonna be busy haha

Usually I’ll join a club mostly for college but with some interest in it. If I’m not interested at all, then why make myself miserable? Ex. DECA, business is NOT my thing. It make look good on the application, but I would never do business.

Some clubs, like Model UN, science bowl, and newspaper, were interesting to me (though I didn’t really expect to enjoy it). They all grew into MAJOR interests for me though. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! Especially Model UN…

We have a club at our school that is like a community service/awareness group. I am interested in helping, but I didn’t join because I knew I would mostly be doing it for college and I didn’t want to hurt the club like that.

Choir and Theatre are the clubs that I mostly joined out of interest. I don’t usually get major roles in the musical so I used to do the musical just for fun. It was too time-consuming though, so I had to quit :frowning: But I’m definitely going to do it senior year since it’s in the second semester!

Overall, people in the clubs at my school are all VERY passionate about the stuff they do. They either were passionate about the topic at the start or grew to love the club.

For me it’s all about my interests, college is just a plus on the side. I’ve been involved with student government/council since the 6th grade and now I’m ASB Parliamentarian and going to run for ASB President. I also joined Key Club out of curiosity freshmen year because my sisters did it when they were in high school. I ended up loving to volunteer and got really involved and passionate about it. I was planning on running for Lieutenant Governor for it but I don’t have the time for that much commitment so I’m only going for president. I think that I wouldn’t be able to join something without having a passion or interest for it. Doing it simply for college sounds so tiresome and tedious.
