does anyone know someone who does, or does anyone here on CC use a college counselor? Who has enough money to spend on such a thing anyway? (most people are probably scared to fess up that they do)

I know one of those expensive college counselors ... he's a nice guy and really knows a lot about the schools and the process. I haven't used his services -- but he's dropped a few crumbs at cocktail parties that have been more like little gold nuggets!

My parents want me to get one, but I think that if you've discovered CC, they're pretty much useless other than for personal attention...

i know, for a fact, that about 5 people in my theology class, who aren't in any honors classes, are using a counselor for over $200/hr. Her advice seems terrible-she's recommended the same schools and advice to all five of them, even though one is a recruited athlete, one wants big city, one college town, etc, etc

I know some people who have them. My mom says she will get me one if I want. I don't know, I think I pretty much know everything that could help me.

I'm guilty...but I honestly think he's helped me a lot!

My friend had one two years ago. He's at Cornell right now.

CC is my counselor!! :D

yeah seriously, cc is insanely awesome
and by cc i mean college confidential not college counselor
:)

We don't have any in Papua New Guinea.

Yeah, we don't have any in Michigan either.

Of course, we really do, but I don't use one, and I don't know anybody who does.

Are you really from Papua New Guinea? Or am I just really gullible?

A few of my friends do....
one had no idea where she wanted to go to college or what she wanted to major in, so her college counselor gave her all these personality tests... a little weird in my opinion.

My uncle is one. He's one of the top in Michigan. His advice is really useful but if he wasn't helping me free because I'm family, I don't think it'd be worth the $150/hour or whatever it is.

Yep. Can help a lot if you get the right one. Otherwise, it can be a pain.

Sounds like a rip off honestly.

sounds like something for a bunch of rich kids who can't figure out life on their own, sorry if I sound really harsh, it just makes me mad when those kids get in and others who I know deserve more do not. Or they both get in, but one cannot pay. Anyway, sorry for my rant.

End Thread~~

my dad wants me to get one.

but my college counselor at school is so sweet and awesome. i love her (=

I never used one, but when I think about it, it's not that bad of an idea. Many families don't understand:

Figuring out the cost of attendance and the amount they must pay.

The expenses that come with long distance schools.

The perceived image of a school and it's compatibility with a student's personality.

The score range required on standarized tests

etc etc. Sure this is info that can be found by scouring the internet, or people can pay people to bring the info to them. I see no problem with it if you have the money, why not.

I hired a fairly cheap one ($1200 for the whole thing) and she has been really helpful. It's not that she has info I can't find, its just helpful to have someone else thinking about it with me. She also helps to pressure me to get stuff done. Like when I went on a college visit trip on spring break, she had some forms for me to fill out to make me think about each aspect of the colleges that I visited.

When you think about the total cost of college, $1200 doesn't seem that much
