Do you need to take three SAT II even though we have new SAT 1?

Do you need to take three SAT II even though we have new SAT 1?

My son is a sophomore in high school. He has taken Math II and Chemistry II and scored 800 in those. This year his PSAT was around 231. Currently he is enrolled in AP BC Calc, AP Chemistry and AP European History classes. In his junior year he may be taking AP US History and AP Physics.

He wants to go to a good undergrad school where he can pursue economics or business major? Will they be offering writing SAT II in future or since it is incorporated in SAT 1 he does not need to take the third SAT II? If he needs to take the third SAT, should it be based on his career interest? Should he focus on Physics should he be taking something in Humanities?

Thanks for the guidance

Last SATII writing test was given in Jan bcos it has been incorporated into the 'new' SAT. Schools prefer to see tests from different subjects, i.e., one humanities/social science and one math/science. But, if applying to a top engineering school or CalTech or MIT, they typically want to see Math 2c, plus a hard science, Chem or Physics.

....most schools have reduced the requirment to two SATII's for next year's applicant class, as have the UCs, but other schools like Penn have not yet made a firm determination.

Note: if the school requires two SATII's, AP scores will not suffice to meet this requirement. Try math and chem this year.

He has already taken Math II and Chemistry II and scored 800 in both tests.

parentny, if your S has an 800 in Math IIc and Chemistry SAT II's, with an (almost) guaranteed NMF if he pulls near that score again, he's got a New SAT to take and some apps to fill out. Other than that -he's done. Tell him to try bass fishing or bowling to fill his soon to be idle time. (Just kidding.) Outstanding job.

Edit: I've edited out the part that suggested I can't read. In other regretfully uneditable posts I've already proven this morning that I don't know the difference between "their" and "there" and that I can't pluralize the word "ranch" correctly. I couldn't live here on the board if folks realized I couldn't comprehend the word "sophomore" in the OP's post. Jeez.

I agree - outstanding job! He will have to take the PSAT again next year unfortunately. He should do well, though. (wouldn't it be nice if soph's could use their scores?)
Since he wants econ or business, I think he might want to take a humanities SATII just to show his roundedness. Whether it's required or not depends on the school. You can find out by going to the admissions sites at the schools he's interested in. My son's GC said that they will be not offering a SATII Writing in the future, as it's covered in the new SAT.

He is probably done, but should check his schools' requirements after he makes a preliminary list. Since he is just a sophomore, he has time. If he takes American History as a junior, that would be a good choice for his 3rd SATII, if that becomes necessary.I think that over the next couple of years, there will be great variability in what SATIIs are required, and that schools are going to be changing as they get some experience with the new SAT - ie, some that have been requiring 3 will go to 2, some may drop the SATII altogether. I don't think any school has ever required more than 3, so if he plans on one more humanities one, he will be well covered.

hahhaha. Bass fishing, that sounds like fun. But it is too cold here, as I am not going to do ice fishing. Actually last summer, I bought him a fishing rod as he is trying to complete a fishing merit badge for boys scouting. I bought one for my self too. I caught a fish but did not know how to take it out and throw back it in water. Another boy scout helped me with this task.

parentny:

Great job!
Check out a few of the admission websites of colleges your S might be interested in applying to. I did so earlier this year, and it seemed quite a few had not made up their minds. Some had already decided on 2, but if I recall correctly, some were still going to insist on 3 (and some on none).
Since both his SAT-IIs are in math/science, he might decide to take one in history later on, perhaps at the end of junior year or beginning of senior year.

Marite: Thanks

Congrates on your son for EA in H.

Parents : Do you have to take SAT II in language if interested in Wharton?
