Do you recommend the following... (AMC and Precalc books)

Do you recommend the following for studying for the AMC?

the Art of Problem Solving, Volume 1: the Basics
the Art of Problem Solving, Volume 2: and Beyond

Also, do you recommend: Precalculus: Textbook & Solutions Manual from Aops, for prepping for honors precalc next year?

Please give me your input if you have read these books. I'm planning to start studying for the AMC's for next yr. Thanks!

This is probably not much help, but I am using “The Art of Problem Solving: Intro to Geometry” for my Honors Geometry course, and I despise it. It offers unclear explanations, and the problems it gives are repetitive and a waste of my time. I don’t know how the others are, but I really am not enjoying this stupid book that doesn’t explain anything.

yeah, i suppose its designed to help you study for the math competitions, which is why they have alot of repitition. thanks!

Volume 1 is highly recommended for the AMC tests, while volume 2 is more helpful for AIME studying. Both are extremely helpful and highly recommended. Of course, you should also take as many AMCs as you can, especially the 2010 and 2011 tests (they get harder).

I don’t think the precalc book is necessary to be honest, unless you are trying to skip precalculus and head straight to calculus. It will go above and beyond what you will learn in class.

how about First Steps for Math Olympians by J. Douglas Faires?
