Do you tell them they aren't your first choice?

We have a couple state university applications under our belts and are now looking at the art school applications. I was rather surprised to see that they ask if they are your first choice and to list where else you are applying in order of preference. I would like D to skip these questions if the online applications let us. I am not sure she can even put them in order of preference at this point.

Did others answer these questions? Do you think it hurt your chances?

Thanks!

I would not tell them your first choice... and I would list the schools to which you are applying in alphabetical order (and make it claear that they are not ranked in order of perference).

This questions often comes up on the Musical Theatre Thread. Different schools have different reasons for asking these questions. Many are simply trying to get a sense of the student.... what kinds of schools are they applying to? If all the schools are BA schools and you are the sole BFA school (or the other way around) you want to make sure that the applicant relaizes the differences. Some school may also be using the information to help them project how many students that can afford to accept in order to get the desired yield.... meaning if it seems like you are the back-up school for a student, and it seems likely they will get into another higher profile school you can afford to accept that student (hoping that they will come, but figuring that they probably will not).

I do not believe it can hurt to generally communicate to where you are applying , but I would not rank the schools. The whole point of applying to multiple schools (instead of Early Decision) is to be able to weigh your options after you are accepted.
