I had never really considered this until recently. One of my teachers who wrote a rec. for me used to work at Harvard, and she asked for all of my AP, SAT, and other national test scores. She mentioned that it was because northeastern schools may pay more attention to national test scores since they don't know my southern school, and that frankly some may have an "instinctive negative tilt" toward southern schools. She said that was certainly the case when she was at Harvard.

I go to a fabulous arts-based school in North Carolina, but do you think my region will really disadvantage me? Has anyone ever heard comments like this before?

Not at all! Many of my friends are actually from the south.

I think being from the south (maybe not so much North Carolina, but definitely Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, etc) may actually be a slight advantage.

Being from an under-represented state helps one in admissions. Many southern states are under-represented.

I know a ton of people who went to southern schools and got rejected by Harvard…
Definite disadvantage.

I know a ton of people who went to California schools and got rejected by Harvard…
Definite disadvantage.

The thing is, with a 93 percent rejection rate, if one among the ten people you know gets into Harvard, that’s actually above the average.

I can’t tell whether you’re being satirical or actually don’t realize your fallacy.

sorry, satirical :)

lets put it this way:

I went to a high school in Florida…300 grads, nobody’s ever heard the name before. I transferred to a top-50 US News Ranked high school in Virginia senior year. I have many friends back in florida and I heard that this is the breakdown:

Florida High School Acceptances (public school of only 300 graduates):
1 Harvard
3 Duke
2 Johns Hopkins
1 Cornell
2 UVA
1 Chicago

Here’s the breakdown for the top-50 High school in Virginia (704 graduates) as published in our “Senior Destination List” in the student newspaper:

1 Johns Hopkins
2 Northwestern
36 UVA

That’s it. No Ivy acceptances whatsoever.

Elite schools love southerners.
