Do you think I can land up at Hanover in a couple of years' time?

I'm a 10th grader from India, interested in biology. I'm also female, if that helps .

Let's split this up into sub-fields, so that it's easier to read.

Grades:Awesome. One of the top few students in the class. No problems here.

Standardized tests: Taking the ACT in October, let's see how it goes, but I'm getting 34's in practise tests from the Rea ACT Book. SAT 2's should be pretty good as well.

EC's (where I think I need to focus):

National level athlete
Zillions of sports at the school level
Heavy involvement in MUN.
School magazine stuff.
Over the next 2 years, I'll probably be highly involved with in-school and some state-level cultural activities.
Gonna start biological research in a few months.
Plan to do quite a bit of volunteer work from next summer on (I'll have a 2 or 3-month break in May)

Recs: Should be pretty good. I'm on amazing terms with all my teachers

Essays: Expect them to be good, I feel I'm quite a good writer

Dartmouth sounds pretty sweet...right from the secluded yet awesome location and the tight-knit community to the lovely campus and top-notch academics. Might I get a chance to end up there in fall 2010?

Oh yeah I won't be needing financial aid.

Probably.

A few questions:

What sport do you play at National level?

What exactly is that school magazine stuff?

Research will look good. But a piece of advice here. Do things which you enjoy doing and not because they will get you into college.

You are looking fine. Good Luck! :)

PS: Get off CC as soon as you can! Go out, enjoy and come back after a few months because once you are addicted you are going to waste a lot of time ;)

Ah, I don't wanna give out my sport as I'd like some privacy, but yes, I could be recruited.

The school magazine stuff is being a member of the editorial board, editing articles we receive and also submitting articles for the magazine.

Why should I get off? When should I come back?

haha because CC is addictive and you'll probably waste a bit of time that you could utilize for AP or SAT prep ;)

Well, I'll try my hardest to listen to you. I'm not a frequent visitor anyway.

But what are my chances, please tell me!

As I said its too early but you are looking good.

You just posted on the other forum you play tennis. Heh so much for privacy. You think Dartmouth will recruit you when Princeton wont?

What a find! Ajay the cop!

Hey dude, blackorder, what's up with being all obsessed with your chances?

And where are you from? I'm a national level tennis player too. PM me, if you wanna preserve your 'privacy'.

You have an above average chance at Dartmouth. I'd say your main edge above other internationals is the fact that you don't need aid. All the other things help, of course - but even though most applicants don't have as great resumes, enough do to make it impossible to accurately predict your chances.

Seriously, chance threads are not very helpful. If you have 1200 SATs and a 2.5 GPA, they're helpful because we can tell you're probably not going to Harvard, but for most people here, chance threads won't reveal anything new. It's not like CC is a fount of psychics who can read the admissions committee's minds.

Thank you guys. Yes I realise that not needing aid will be a plus point. So you think I'll have a good chance even if I apply RD?

Please come back in a year. Without SAT scores and with little to go on in terms of academics and ECs, no one on CC can possibly advise you.

As a foreign student from India, the competition at the top schools will be extreme.

Go get a life.

haha BalletGirl has been digging into old threads :p

i thought the admissions at D is need-blind?

^ Not for international students, mate. But D promises to meet the need of the student if he/she is admitted.

I wish we all had the same play ground to play this college admissions game. :)

Providing the same playground would be unfair. Indian colleges charge non-citizens 5 times the regular tuition.

Look, you are in TENTH GRADE. You have almost three more years to worry about college. Work hard in school, get involved in your community, and the rest will work itself out. Dartmouth doesnt want the kids who start posting on CC in tenth grade and post over 3000 times--they want the kids who have been important parts of their high schools, used the resources well, and who are very naturally intelligent. Whether you are that intelligent remains to be seen, but all you can do is keep working hard.

Hellfire : And if you convert that amount from Rupees to dollars its not even the same as boarding charges at US Colleges :p
