so Ive been nervous due to the surge of people applying to Canada just to get away from Trump and I fear this will ruin my chances of getting into uni. what are your thoughts?
It won’t ruin your chances. Even if applications increase 25%, their acceptance rate is still over 30%. You will stand relatively similar chances. Nothing you can do either way.
McGill admits strictly by stats: UW GPA and SAT/ACT scores. McGill has experienced a surge in US applicants but if you are comfortably above their published minima you will be accepted.
@TomSrOfBoston, my son just applied from France (he is American, also French). Do you have a link to suggest regarding his chances? I can’t find one.
@alcibiade
French Baccalaureate

70% increase in American applicants at University of Toronto, 22% increase at McGill.
I’m not going to lie I definitely looked into UT’s Bachelor’s of Commerce degree, but they don’t allow transfer students.
@TomSrOfBoston do you know whether public Canadian Universities have quotas of how many Provincial applicants they need to leave room for? or Canadian citizens in general?
@philbegas At McGill at least the only government mandated quota is in the MDCM program in the Faculty of Medicine. McGill has target enrolments of 25% international (half American), 30% out of province Canadian and 45% Quebec residents but those can be changed at the university’s discretion.
Americans need to be aware that need based financial aid is very limited for international students as those resources go primarily to Canadians.
Gotcha. I was just curious whether an increase in US applicants directly affects application chances due to quotas or indirectly affects them due to a larger applicant pool.
@TomSrOfBoston, thanks very much.
BTW, all universities in Canada are publicly funded, except for a handful of small Christian schools e.g. Canadian Mennonite University
