Future...?

I'm a sophmore in high school and I really hope to go to McGill University to study life sciences. I know that the science branch is the toughest to get into, and living in America I don't know how likely an option MGU is for me.

I've gotten A's and B's all my life, and am taking mostly honors/AP classes this year. I have citizenship in the US, Canada, and the UK, and my dad went to McGill. I'm taking the PSAT this week and will ask again with results.

My GPA is 3.71 unweighted and 4.43 weighted...I'm top 15% in my class (32) and am in class council and the environmental club. I guess I'm wondering how likely getting in will be for me if I continue to stay at this performance level, and what I can do to improve my chances. Thanks!

I would try to work harder to get that GPA up and, in turn, get your class rank to top 10%. I think that would help you out a lot.

I am no expert on McGill but I don’t think it’s is overly competitive for Americans to get into. I would wait until one of the McGill grads on this forum responds.

I think you have a good shot. Also, no one abbreviates it to MGU.

The median for Americans who enrol at McGill is 3.8 UW GPA and 2065 SAT.

Here are the minimum requirements. There is some variation depending on Faculty or program chosen and there is the caveat that meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission.

[Admissions standards (US)](http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/standards/unitedstates/)

Thank you, tomofboston, that really, really helped! The SAT requirements seemed a little low to me, though…my counselor said that I’d have to get strong Ivy-league acceptable scores to go to McGill (will never again say MGU–feel like I’ve made terrible college faux pas!). Anyway, took two practice-PSATs today and got 2050 and 2170. Good/bad? I plan to do a cram course this winter.

your counselors over exaggerated mcgill’s admission standards. Be slightly above the minimum and you will be in for sure. It is actually not even the minimum, it is more or less a guide, i know a few kids with lower scores than the minimum that got in.
