Doctor Shadowing

How would one go about setting up to shadow a doctor? Would I just ask a doctor, or go through a hospital?

Some schools set up a Senior Experience/Internship program. You can select the area of your interest and work through the Volunteering dept of any local hospital.

If your school does not collaborate with a local hospital in Sr Exp or Internship, you may simply approach the Head of Volunteering dept at a local hospital near you. Try to set up a meeting. Bring your resume. Chat with them about your interest. Generally the heads of Volunteering dept at any hospital are used to working with young adults, and are very good at mentoring/guiding young adults.

You may have to put in some hours of weekend/and or Summer volunteering to get to know them better. Generally, the doc-shadowing is encouraged in your Senior year. So, you might want to begin to build bridges with key individuals a few months prior to this.

Good luck!

Hey I'm a high school student shadowing in a pediatric office next week. We have mini-mester in my school which is like 3 days we can shadow someone and we also have college days (Im a senior) It all started by simply asking. My younger sister we sicki, my stepfather asked the nurse practictioner telling her I had an interest in medicine, and she was more than happy to help. My Biology teacher is also good friends with the head physician. So ask a science teacher if they have a docotr friend or just ask. ;)

If you have a family friend who's a doctor ask him if he could set you up.

So, here is what I'm planning on doing.

My parents are friends with someone who works for Northwestern (not a doctor) and he is going to ask a few doctors if they would allow me to shadow them during the summer.

Would it be smarter for me to do the requesting instead of him?
Instead of asking a doctor directly, should I go through human resources or volunteer services?
What type of schedule should I have in mind, (I would like to accumulate a good number of hours to appear competitive for Accelerated med programs)?

I would advice you to do the legwok yourself. You will come out looking far more mature for taking this effort yourself.

Call up the hospital's volunteering office, make an appointment and show up with your CV (even if it is a 1 page cv with a couple of teachers as references).

You can google their info on-line. Good luck!
